Brothers and sisters, if you want to be a man of prayer, you have to learn to pray with authority. This kind of prayer is described by the Lord in Matthew 18:18. “Whatever you bind on the earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on the earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” In this verse, there is a prayer that is called a binding prayer and a prayer that is called a loosing prayer. The move in heaven is dependent on the move on earth. Heaven listens to the earth and obeys the command of the earth. Whatever the earth binds will be bound in heaven, and whatever the earth looses will be loosed in heaven. The earth does not pray; it binds and looses. This is to pray with authority.

Basic Principles Concerning the Eldership chs. 2

According to the revelation of the entire Bible, the basic factor in God’s administration should not be a king, the apostles, or the prophets but the elders. The direct administration in both the Old Testament and the New Testament is with the elders. When the administration was apparently with the kings in the Old Testament, that was an abnormal situation. The genuine administration of God depends basically and directly on the elders.
We should not decide whether a brother is an elder at an early stage of his growth in life, when he is immature. We must be slow in this matter and wait until the time is right. Otherwise, it is unsafe and may cause trouble. The New Testament reveals that the elders in a local church should not be appointed in a quick way. There is the need of time for thorough consideration so that the qualifications may be manifested. Then the time will be right to make a decision. Farmers wait to reap grain until it is ripe. It would be foolish to reap before the harvest ripens. Similarly, whenever a new local church is raised up as the Lord’s testimony, it is proper and safe to delay appointing the elders until there is a full manifestation of the situation.

I. The subject of the book:
"The maintenance of the order of the church"

The subject of the book of Titus is the maintenance of the order of the church. During Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, the churches were subject to testing. During this time of testing, certain churches proved not to be so orderly. Thus, after his release from prison, Paul visited various places, including the city of Ephesus and the island of Crete. Realizing the situation of the churches, Paul became burdened to write an epistle to Titus telling him how to maintain the proper order of a local assembly. This was the background and also the reason for the writing of this book. If the order of the church is to be maintained, the authority in the church needs to be established. Therefore, in this message we shall consider from 1:1-9 the establishing of the authority in the church. As we shall see, this has much to do with appointing elders in each city (v. 5).

"The Experience of life"

Strictly speaking, the clearance of the past cannot be regarded as an experience of life in itself. It can only be considered as an appendix to the experience of regeneration, since a man who has been truly regenerated and saved will naturally bring all his past to an end. The normal experience, therefore, of regeneration certainly includes the element of the ending of the past. But because there are some who do not seem to be regenerated and saved in a thoroughgoing way, although they have indeed been regenerated and saved, their past has not been immediately cleared. Not until they are once more revived by the Lord do they make up this lesson of clearing the past. It is proper, therefore, that we separate regeneration and the clearance of the past and consider them as two distinct experiences of life.

What are the things of the past that need to be cleared away after we are saved? What are the objects that must be ended and cleared up? Altogether there are four categories: (1) unrighteous matters, (2) improper matters, (3) evil and unclean matters, and (4) old ways of living. After we have been saved, there needs to be a clearing up and conclusion of these matters.
