IMAGINE THE PAIN Pope Benedict XVI must have felt, still alive, seeing a liberal Jesuit successor, with just the minimum academic background, set aside much of his work and discard measures intended to preserve unity between Catholics attached to both the older and newer forms of the Mass.

Both popes exercised their legitimate authority in issuing liturgical discipline, but it is clear which one sought continuity and deeper fidelity to the Church’s liturgical heritage.

Here are excerpts from their motu proprios regarding the designated places of worship for those who adhere to the 1962 Missal:

Summorum Pontificum Art. 10. "The local Ordinary, should he judge it opportune, may erect a personal parish in accordance with the norm of Canon 518 for celebrations according to the older form of the Roman rite, or appoint a rector or chaplain, with respect for the requirements of law."

Traditionis Custodes Art. 3, § 2. "[The Bishop] is to designate one or more locations where the faithful adherents of these groups may gather for the eucharistic celebration (not however in the parochial churches and without the er****on of new personal parishes)."

Notice how Pope Francis’s decisions appear to set aside Pope Benedict’s pastoral approach, theological depth, extensive academic background, and the body of literature he contributed to the Church. His decree also seems to contradict the spirit of Canon 518, which states:

"As a general rule a parish is to be territorial, that is, one which includes all the Christian faithful of a certain territory. When it is expedient, however, personal parishes are to be established determined by reason of the rite, language, or nationality of the Christian faithful of some territory, or EVEN FOR SOME OTHER REASON."

May God grant the Church future popes as holy and intellectually gifted as Benedict XVI, and may God have mercy on the soul of Pope Francis. May Pope Leo XIV choose the truth faithfully, above any personal inclinations.

MISSA AUREA

Rev. Fr. Mark Sese celebrated Missa Aurea. The 5th Day of Misa Aguinaldo (Rorate Caeli Mass)

During the Middle Ages, the Mass of the Missus Est — the first words of the Gospel of the Annunciation — on the Ember Wednesday of Advent was celebrated very solemnly as a kind of festival of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The stational church in Rome is the Basilica of Saint Mary Major; this choice signifies that today’s Mass is equal to that of the greatest feasts of the Mother of God. It was called the Missa Aurea, the “Golden Mass.” In manuscripts of the Middle Ages, the capital letters of the text of the Annunciation Gospel were written in gold. The letters of gold were but a sign of the secret grace hidden within the words of the Angel Gabriel and within the response of the Virgin Mary.

Then, too, there is the tradition of celebrating today’s Mass in the glow of candlelight. The “Golden Mass” was especially popular throughout Europe where the faithful hastened to their churches before dawn, bearing lanterns, confident of obtaining on this day whatever special grace they asked through the intercession of the Virgin of the Annunciation.

In some monasteries, the Gospel is sung today to a particular melody: the same ancient melody used to sing the Gospel of Pentecost. The Annunciation is the Proto-Pentecost. The Virgin Mother, overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, is the living image of the Church overshadowed by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Rev. Fr. Mark Sese celebrated Rorate Caeli Mass at Immaculate Conception Parish on the forth day of the novena.

Since the fraternity is prohibited to say TLM publicly in the parish, Fr. Sese celebrated the Rorate Caeli Mass the closest possible way to Traditional Latin Mass.

Today, October 27, last Sunday of the month, Fr. Mark Sese celebrated Christ the King Sunday.
============
Why is it that the last Sunday of October is Christ the King Sunday in the Traditional Latin Mass?

According to Dr. Peter Kwasniewski, "we need to look first at the reasons given by Pope Pius XI himself for choosing the last Sunday of October:

Therefore by Our Apostolic Authority We institute the Feast of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ to be observed yearly throughout the whole world on the last Sunday of the month of October—the Sunday, that is, which immediately precedes the Feast of All Saints. … The last Sunday of October seemed the most convenient of all for this purpose, because it is at the end of the liturgical year, and thus the feast of the Kingship of Christ sets the crowning glory upon the mysteries of the life of Christ already commemorated during the year, and, before celebrating the triumph of all the Saints, we proclaim and extol the glory of him who triumphs in all the Saints and in all the Elect. Make it your duty and your task, Venerable Brethren, to see that sermons are preached to the people in every parish to teach them the meaning and the importance of this feast, that they may so order their lives as to be worthy of faithful and obedient subjects of the divine King. (Encyclical Letter Quas Primas, 28-29)

Pius XI’s intention, as can be gleaned from n. 29, is to emphasize the glory of Christ as terminus of His earthly mission, a glory and mission visible and perpetuated in history by the saints. Hence the feast falls shortly before the Feast of All Saints, to emphasize that what Christ inaugurated in His own person before ascending in glory, the saints then instantiate and carry further in human society, culture, and nations. It is a feast primarily about celebrating Christ’s ongoing kingship over all reality, including this present world, where the Church must fight for the recognition of His rights, the actual extension of His dominion to all domains, individual and social.
