WORSHIP LEADER MATT REDMAN IS ASKING THE CHURCH AN IMPORTANT QUESTION: ARE WE ACTUALLY WORSHIPING GOD, OR JUST SINGING SONGS ABOUT HIM?

Worship leader and songwriter Matt Redman is encouraging churches to take a closer look at the songs we sing and what they are actually leading people to do.

Redman says there is nothing wrong with songs that tell the story of our faith or teach biblical truth. But worship should go beyond simply giving people information about God. It should lead people into a response to God.

“I don’t want my songs to just be a classroom,” Redman said. “I want them to be a chapel too.”

He cautioned that worship can become too horizontal, with believers singing to one another about who God is, while losing the vertical expression of directly addressing God through prayer, praise, surrender, and awe.

“The job of a worship song can be to lead you back into wonder,” he explained.

For Redman, meaningful worship holds together the fullness of who God is: His mercy and His majesty. His nearness and His holiness. His friendship and His glory.

Worship should teach us truth, but it should also turn our attention toward the One the truth is about.

So maybe the question every worshiper...and every church...should ask is this:

Are we simply singing about God, or are we actually singing to Him? 🙌
