Traditional Feast of the Ascension
Thursday Devotion to St. Jude Thaddeus.

May 14, 2026 marks the Traditional Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, a sacred celebration commemorating Jesus Christโ€™s glorious return to the Father forty days after His Resurrection. On this same Thursday, many faithful Catholics also honor the weekly devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus, the beloved patron of desperate and hopeless causes. Together, these devotions beautifully remind us that our hope is always anchored in Christ, who reigns in Heaven and never abandons His people.

The Ascension is not merely the departure of Jesus from earth; it is His triumph. After conquering sin and death through His Passion and Resurrection, Christ ascended into Heaven to prepare a place for us. As the disciples watched Him rise, they were reminded that His mission on earth would continue through the Church. Though He ascended bodily into Heaven, He remains present through the Holy Spirit, the Holy Eucharist, and the faithful witness of believers throughout the world.

This feast invites us to lift our eyes and hearts toward Heaven. In a world burdened by fear, suffering, uncertainty, and division, the Ascension reminds us that Christ reigns above every storm. Our trials are temporary, but Godโ€™s promises are eternal. Jesus did not leave humanity in abandonment; instead, He opened the gates of Heaven and called us to walk in faith until we meet Him in glory.

On this Thursday devotion to St. Jude Thaddeus, many turn to him in moments of despair and impossibility. Countless faithful have sought his intercession during times of sickness, brokenness, financial struggles, family problems, and spiritual darkness. St. Judeโ€™s devotion teaches us perseverance in prayer and unwavering trust in Godโ€™s mercy. Even when situations seem beyond human understanding, God continues to work in hidden and powerful ways.

The combination of the Ascension and the Thursday devotion to St. Jude carries a profound message: never lose hope. Christ reigns victorious in Heaven, and the saints continue to intercede for us. Our prayers are never ignored, and our suffering is never meaningless when united with God.

As we celebrate this holy day, may our hearts be strengthened with courage and faith. May we continue to seek Heaven above all earthly things and trust completely in the Lordโ€™s perfect will.

Saint Jude Thaddeus, pray for us.
Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, lead us safely to Heaven.

Tagbilaran Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Worker, is the seat of the Diocese of Tagbilaran. This diocese was established on November 8, 1941, by Pope Pius XII through the Apostolic Constitution *In Sublimi Petri Cathedra*. It was created by separating the island-province of Bohol from the Archdiocese of Cebu, thus becoming a suffragan diocese of that archdiocese.

The Church of Tagbilaran, dedicated in honor of St. Joseph the Worker, was originally founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1595. The current stone structure was reconstructed and expanded between 1839 and 1855 by Fr. Valero de San Sebastian, following a fire in 1798. It was elevated to cathedral status on November 8, 1941.

On May 1, 2021, the Cathedral Parish was designated as the Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph by Bishop Alberto Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

On May 26, 2026, Bishop-Elect Gerardo F. S**o, Jr. will be ordained and installed at the Cathedral Parish and Shrine of St. Joseph as the 8th Bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

It is a tall, pointed hat worn by bishops during Mass. it is not worn for decoration or status. It carries a deep spiritual meaning about authority, teaching, and service in the Church established by Jesus Christ.

First, the mitre is a symbol of the bishopโ€™s authority to teach and lead the faithful.
When a priest becomes a bishop, he is given the responsibility to guide the Church in truth and faith.

Second, the mitre points to the bishopโ€™s call to holiness and obedience to God.
The two peaks of the mitre rising upward remind the faithful that the bishopโ€™s mission is directed toward heaven. It is a visible sign that his leadership should always be guided by Godโ€™s will and the example of Christ.

Third, the mitre connects the bishop to the long tradition of the Church.
For many centuries, bishops have worn the mitre during liturgical celebrations as part of the Churchโ€™s visible signs of order and continuity. It shows that the bishop is part of a line of shepherds who continue the mission of the apostles in caring for Godโ€™s people.

The mitre on a bishopโ€™s head is not about appearance, it is a sign that he is called to guide Godโ€™s people with truth and humility.

The ring is not merely jewelry or decoration; it carries a profound spiritual meaning related to authority, responsibility, and the bishopโ€™s relationship with the Church established by Jesus Christ.

First, the bishopโ€™s ring is a sign of his spiritual authority and office. When a priest is ordained as a bishop, he receives a ring as one of the symbols of his new role. Just as a wedding ring signifies a commitment to marriage, the bishopโ€™s ring indicates that he has been entrusted with leadership in the Church.

Second, the bishopโ€™s ring represents his spiritual โ€œmarriageโ€ to the Church. The Church is often described as the Bride of Christ. In a similar way, the bishop is seen as being spiritually united to the local Church he serves.

Third, the ring is also a sign of respect for the office of the bishop. In many Catholic cultures, people may kiss the bishopโ€™s ring as a gesture of honorโ€”not to worship the person, but to show respect for the role he holds in the Church. This custom highlights the sacred responsibility entrusted to him as a successor to the apostles.

The ring on a bishopโ€™s finger is not about status; it is about the responsibility to serve God and His people.
