📖 Sunday Preaching: Testing Before Blessing

🍂We often ask God to send blessings right away, but He works in a way we do not always expect: He tests first, before He lifts us up. Every trial you face is not a sign He has forgotten you—it is how He prepares you to hold the blessing He has planned.

💜 Testing Builds the Strength to Receive

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:4

When gold is refined, it is placed in fire not to destroy it, but to remove every impurity. The struggles you carry—long days at work, tight finances, heavy worries—are that fire. God is not punishing you; He is shaping you. If He gave you the full blessing today before your heart and hands are ready, you might not steward it well, or it could become a burden. Testing grows your patience, wisdom, and faith—so when the blessing comes, you will stand firm and not waver.

💜 True Blessing Comes From His Hand Alone

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.” — Proverbs 10:22

What we gain through our own effort alone can fade quickly. But what God gives lasts forever. He tests us to teach us: this blessing does not come from your strength, your connections, or your luck—it comes from Me. When you walk through difficulty and still trust Him, you prove that your hope is in Him, not just in what He gives. Then when He pours out His provision, you will know deep down that it is His gift, and your heart will remain humble.

💜 You Are Precious, So You Are Refined

“See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.” — Isaiah 48:10

God says clearly: I have chosen you, and I am doing this for your good. The fire feels hot, the wait feels long—but He never takes His eyes off you. He allows testing because He sees what you can become, more than you see it yourself. He is making you stronger, kinder, more faithful—ready for the plans He laid out long ago.

Closing Thought

Do not grow weary when you are being tested. The storm is not the end of your story—it is the path to your testimony. The blessing is sure; it is only being prepared, just as you are.

Claim this truth today: Lord, I trust Your timing. If You are testing me, it is because You have something far greater in store. I will wait, I will stand, and I will receive all You have promised. 🙏✨

Israel's thirst was real.

After leaving Egypt, they journeyed through the wilderness exactly as the LORD commanded. Yet when they arrived at Rephidim, there was no water to drink (Exodus 17:1).

Their need was genuine.

But the real issue was never their thirst.
It was what their thirst caused them to forget.

Only weeks earlier, they had witnessed the ten plagues devastate Egypt.
They had walked through the Red Sea on dry ground.
Every morning, they woke to manna from heaven.

God had given them reminder after reminder that He was with them.

Yet one present crisis became so overwhelming that it drowned out every evidence of His past faithfulness.

Instead of bringing their need to God in faith, they quarreled with Moses and accused God of bringing them into the wilderness to die.

Then they asked:
"𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁?" (Exodus 17:7)

That question reveals why Moses said they were testing the LORD.

They were not simply asking God for water.
They were demanding fresh proof of His presence, as though everything He had already done was no longer enough.

How quickly our present circumstances can become louder than God's past faithfulness.

Yet God's response is astonishing.

Instead of giving Israel what they deserved, He gave them what they needed.

The LORD told Moses to strike the rock at Horeb, and water flowed out for the people to drink.

Who would have imagined that water could come from a rock in the middle of a desert?

The place that appeared empty became the place where God's provision was revealed.

The apostle Paul later tells us that this miracle pointed beyond itself.
"...𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁." (1 Corinthians 10:4)

Just as life-giving water flowed from the struck rock, Jesus, the true Rock, was struck for our sins so that all who believe in Him might receive the living water of eternal life.

Most of us will never wander through a desert looking for water.
But we all experience seasons when something essential seems to be missing.

A financial burden.
A broken relationship.
Declining health.
Unanswered prayers.
An uncertain future.

In those moments, we often find ourselves asking the same question Israel asked:
"𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲?"

The wilderness has a way of exposing what is already in our hearts.

It reveals whether we will interpret today's problems through the lens of God's faithfulness, or reinterpret God's faithfulness through the lens of today's problems.

True faith does not ignore hardship.

Israel's thirst was real.
But faith remembers what fear so easily forgets.

It remembers that the God who opened the Red Sea is still the same God standing with us in the wilderness.

So when one present crisis threatens to make you forget a thousand reminders of God's faithfulness, don't look only at what is missing.

Look at what God has already done.
And above all, remember the cross.

If you ever wonder whether God is with you, you don't need Him to prove Himself again.
He already has.

The God who was faithful then is the same God who remains faithful today.
