Today - October 20, 2025
is a Holiday in the Province of Leyte
because 20th of October is a Leyte Landing Day
- the day when Mc Arthur landed on Palo, Leyte.
Captain Isao is remembered for he led a garrison in Dulag, Leyte.

CAPT. ISAO "YAMASOY" YAMAZOE

Not all stories of war are written in hate. In the quiet town of Dulag, Leyte, locals still speak of Captain Isao “Yamasoy” Yamazoe, a Japanese officer remembered not for cruelty, but for compassion.

During the Japanese occupation (1942–1944), Capt. Yamazoe led a garrison in Dulag where, unlike most invaders, he treated Filipinos with respect. He encouraged families to plant crops so no one would go hungry, held morning calisthenics and movie nights, and even ensured education continued in community-run schools.

When guerrillas planned to attack the Japanese post, Yamazoe moved his troops away from town to spare civilians — a decision that cost him his life in Barangay Curva (now M.H. Del Pilar), Dulag, in 1943 at only 32 years old. The townspeople mourned deeply; the church bells rang the entire day in his honor.

Today, a shrine stands in Dulag built in 1985 to commemorate the fallen captain — a reminder that even amid war, humanity can prevail.
