Eighty-three (83) men who are holders of the priesthood gather together during a General Priesthood Meeting held on July 9, 2023, at the Surigao Philippines District Center, Narciso St., Surigao City, with Siargao Branch and others joining virtually. Topics shared during the meeting included the instructions from priesthood leaders, missionary work, priesthood responsibilities, priesthood ordinances, the covenant path, finding lost members, and focusing on the temple and the Savior, Jesus Christ. The meeting intended to increase the commitment of priesthood holders to follow Jesus Christ and serve all the children of God.

It was on April 27, 1915 that the First Presidency sent a letter to local leaders about the “Home Evening,” with these words, among others, “This ‘Home Evening’ should be devoted to prayer, singing hymns, songs, instrumental music, scripture-reading, family topics and specific instruction on the principles of the gospel, and on the ethical problems of life, as well as the duties and obligations of children to parents, the home, the Church, society and the nation.”

When we joined the church on February 12, 1977---when membership of the church in the Philippines was only in number 15,000 to 17,000---we started to spend Monday nights for family home evening as introduced by the missionaries. Since then and until our five children were born and growing, we used the family home evening program as a means to teach the family fundamental doctrines of righteous living, with other activities as suggested. When we are faced with problems we sit together as a family in council to discuss proposed solutions. We allow them to participate in serious family matters.

Our children are now grown and have families of their own. As parents we are grateful that until now they are still trying to actively participate in the affairs of the church.

Today’s children are stormed by ever increasing enticements to ride on the surging tide of immorality. The sinking ship of moral excursion is drowning many of these tender souls to the whirlpools of wickedness that destroy dignity and demean decency. They make a mock at chastity. They seek the thrills of drug addiction, of drunkenness, of computer gaming and of internet po*******hy above the quest for a productive and joyful future. They discredit honesty and virtue. They despise obedience to the commandments of God and instead join the spiralling trends of disobedience to law and order. In the end they cultivate habits that demolish character and destroy worthy dreams.

How then can we ever protect our children from these unending assaults against the appropriate order of morality? How can we save them from the ever welcoming door of moral digression?

In the words of Daniel Webster I found a profound truth. Said he: "If we work upon marble, it will perish. If we work upon brass, time will efface it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work upon men's immortal minds, if we imbue them with high principles, with the just fear of God and love of their fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something which...will brighten and brighten to all eternity."

When we entered into the new and everlasting covenant of marriage with God in the Temple and I and my ever dearest Letty and our family were sealed together for time and all eternity, and continue to renew such covenants, I am continually thrilled at the marvelously divine and breathtakingly incomprehensible promises which Heavenly Father declared through the ordinance of the Holy Priesthood.

I love Pres. George Albert Smith’s words, “It is not so important how many valuables you may have, how much property you may possess, and how many of the honors of men you may acquire and all those things that are so desirable in the world. The thing that God has given to you that is worth more than all the rest is the opportunity to obtain eternal life in the celestial kingdom and have as your companions, throughout the ages of eternity, sons and daughters, husbands and wives with whom you have associated here on earth.”

“WHEREAS, Presidential Proclamation No. 60 declares every last week of September as Family Week to focus on the importance of strengthening and promoting unity, solidarity and stability of the Filipino family as the basic unit of Filipino society and for whose well-being all national development efforts are directed.” It would, therefore, be such a wondrous opportunity to share our thoughts and experiences about family life at this time and season of the year.

There are many and varied applicable recipes for happy and enduring marriage and family life. However, it is only by sincere application and induction into the union that they become effective menu.

As husband and wife united by a solemn and sacred covenant, we are under obligation to strengthen the bond that fastens our hearts together. As spouses, we need to understand that our relationship is profound, encircling, and far-reaching. It requires trust, reliance, unselfishness and sacrifices for one another. It is an absolute alliance with common ideals and patterns. It involves purity of thought and fidelity in action. It entails faith in God and His eternal plan of happiness of which the family is central. It is infinite, grand, and glorious. This relationship should never weary nor fade. It should remain alive through thick and thin, through joys and sorrow, through successes and failures, and through time and all eternity.

It has been said that, “To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved” (David O. McKay). Indeed, the trust that we have for each other as spouses provides us with greater confidence on each of our character as persons. My first assignment in my employment with the Philippine National Bank was in a capital town requiring almost 10 hours of travel by bus on a very rough highway. It was an assignment of a year and a half, but never during that period did my wife ever visit the place. Many of my colleagues asked why? My simple response was we trust each other.

When my wife placed his complete trust in me, I am even more motivated to honor and be true to our marital vows. My personal character and moral make-up become even more self-evident. Then I find an increased capacity to overcome temptations and go through the challenging encounters of marital life and parental responsibility.
