Today, the Church solemnly concludes the liturgical celebration of Christmas with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lordโwhere the hidden and humble life of Jesus at Nazareth meets the dawning of His public mission.
At the River Jordan, Christ who is sinless submits Himself to the baptism of repentanceโnot because He needs cleansing, but because He chooses solidarity with humanity. Here, He wades into the waters sanctifying creation; He embraces our brokenness so that we may be made new. Heaven opens, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, and the voice of the Father proclaims:
This moment reveals the mystery of the Trinity and the beginning of Christโs saving work. The One born in Bethlehem now steps forward to fulfill the mission that will lead Him through preaching, healing, suffering, and ultimately His Paschal Mystery โ to bring salvation to all.
As we recall our own Baptism, may we remember that we, too, became children of God, temples of the Spirit, and disciples of Christโs light. Baptism is more than a tradition; it is a calling: to live as beloved sons and daughters, to reject sin, to witness the Gospel, and to journey toward holiness.
May the feast we celebrate today renew our identity and mission: to reflect the humility of Christ, to cooperate with the grace we have received, and to joyfully proclaim the Good News with our lives.
