Lectionary: 697

READING OF THE DAY

A reading from 1 John 1:1-4

Beloved:
What was from the beginning,
what we have heard,
what we have seen with our eyes,
what we looked upon
and touched with our hands
concerns the Word of life โ€”
for the life was made visible;
we have seen it and testify to it
and proclaim to you the eternal life
that was with the Father and was made visible to usโ€”
what we have seen and heard
we proclaim now to you,
so that you too may have fellowship with us;
for our fellowship is with the Father
and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.

Alleluia
See Te Deum

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
We praise you, O God,
we acclaim you as Lord;
the glorious company of Apostles praise you.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to John 20:1a and 2-8

On the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene ran and went to Simon Peter
and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,
"They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we do not know where they put him."
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter
and arrived at the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him,
he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head,
not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first,
and he saw and believed.

Our Daily Prayer
From Grief to Hope: Encountering the Risen Christ

Today's Gospel is from John 20:1a and 2-8

On the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene ran and went to Simon Peter
and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,
"They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we do not know where they put him."
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter
and arrived at the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him,
he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,

Then the other disciple also went in,

Reflection

The passage from John 20:1a and 2-8 recounts the dramatic and pivotal moment when Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb of Jesus. This narrative is rich with themes of faith, doubt, and the transformative power of encountering the risen Christ. Mary's journey from grief to hope serves as a profound example of the human experience of faith and the profound impact of Jesus' resurrection.

Mary Magdalene's initial reaction is one of confusion and grief. She does not yet understand the significance of the empty tomb. Her faith is tested, and she is left in a state of uncertainty. However, her actionsโ€”running to inform the disciples and returning to the tombโ€”show her deep devotion and love for Jesus. This devotion is rewarded when she encounters the risen Christ later in the chapter, leading to her transformation from a grieving disciple to a proclaimer of the resurrection.

The beloved disciple's response is one of immediate faith. He sees the empty tomb and believes, illustrating the power of witnessing the signs of Jesus' resurrection. His belief is not based on physical evidence alone but on a deeper understanding and trust in Jesus' words and promises.

This passage invites us to reflect on our own faith journeys. Like Mary Magdalene, we may experience moments of doubt and confusion, but our devotion and love for Jesus can lead us to encounter Him in new and transformative ways. Like the beloved disciple, we are called to see beyond the physical evidence and trust in the promises of Jesus, even when they seem impossible.

Reflection Questions:

1. How does Mary Magdalene's journey from grief to hope inspire you in your own faith journey, especially during times of doubt and confusion?
2. In what ways can you, like the beloved disciple, cultivate a deeper trust in Jesus' promises, even when they seem impossible?

Feast of Saint Stephen, First Martyr
Lectionary: 696

READING OF THE DAY

A reading from Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59

Stephen, filled with grace and power,
was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
Cyrenians, and Alexandrians,
and people from Cilicia and Asia,
came forward and debated with Stephen,
but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.

When they heard this, they were infuriated,
and they ground their teeth at him.
But he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven
and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and he said,
"Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
standing at the right hand of God."
But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears,
and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

Alleluia
Psalm 118:26a, 27a

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD:
the LORD is God and has given us light.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to Matthew 10:17-22

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved."

Our Daily Prayer
Trusting God in the Midst of Persecution

Today's Gospel is Matthew 10:17-22

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.

but whoever endures to the end will be saved."

Reflection

The passage from Matthew 10:17-22 highlights the division that the disciples' message will cause. Jesus warns that family members will betray one another, and children will rise against their parents. This division is a result of the radical nature of the gospel message, which challenges the status quo and calls for a complete commitment to God. Despite this division, Jesus assures the disciples that those who endure to the end will be saved.

This passage is a powerful reminder of the cost of discipleship and the faithfulness of God. It encourages us to remain steadfast in our faith, even in the face of persecution and hardship. It also reminds us of the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength. As we reflect on these words, we are called to trust in God's presence and protection, knowing that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Reflection Questions:

1. How does Jesus' warning to His disciples encourage you to remain steadfast in your faith, even in the face of persecution and hardship?
2. In what ways can you rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength in your own life and ministry?
