1 𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝕋𝕆 𝔾𝕆 — As we approach the 75th Jubilee Anniversary of the Diocese of Sorsogon, let’s look back at how the diocese began.

Did you know that when Bishop Arturo Mandin Bastes, SVD took over the Diocese of Sorsogon on April 17, 2003, his leadership marked a shift from the Diocesan Pastoral Plan (DPP) which emphasized organized pastoral and social initiatives toward the Diocesan Ecclesial Evangelization Program (DEEP), centered more explicitly on gospel-driven, missionary evangelization. This change aligns with the Church’s insistence that evangelization should be a constant priority, offering not only words but a life that bears witness to Christ.

Within DEEP, diocesan life is structured around three connected emphases: first, the Word of God as the foundation of evangelization and formation; second, Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) as the key “starting point” for discipleship, prayer, Scripture reading, catechesis, and shared commitment rooted in communion with the Church and sustained by the Church’s sacramental and liturgical life; and third, faith expressed through love and social responsibility, supporting authentic engagement with the needs of the poor and marginalized and a real commitment to social transformation.

2 𝔻𝔸𝕐𝕊 𝕋𝕆 𝔾𝕆 — As we approach the 75th Jubilee Anniversary of the Diocese of Sorsogon, let’s look back at how the diocese began.

Did you know that Bishop Jesus Yu Varela’s appointment in 1980 marked a major pastoral turning point for the Diocese of Sorsogon. Under his leadership, the diocese adopted a more structured, participatory, and collaborative style of governance—encouraging shared responsibility among clergy, religious, and lay faithful—so pastoral decisions could respond more faithfully to the real needs of the local Church.

A key milestone of this renewal was the diocese’s first formal Diocesan Pastoral Assembly, which then led to Sorsogon’s first ever Diocesan Pastoral Plan—a practical roadmap for future evangelization and social action. This plan helped broaden the diocese’s reach beyond purely cathedral-centered ministries by strengthening initiatives such as family-life advocacy, community organizing, and using media for evangelization (including diocesan radio programs). In this way, Varela’s governance embodied collaboration and lay participation as a means for building a more effective diocesan mission, with results that continued to influence pastoral planning even after his retirement in 2003.

4 𝔻𝔸𝕐𝕊 𝕋𝕆 𝔾𝕆 — As we approach the 75th Jubilee Anniversary of the Diocese of Sorsogon, let’s look back at how the diocese began.

Did you know that Bishop Teopisto Valderrama Alberto was a Filipino prelate who served as the first Bishop of Sorsogon. Appointed in July 1952, he was instrumental in establishing and organizing the newly created Roman Catholic Diocese, which then covered the provinces of Sorsogon and Masbate.

Appointed by Pope Pius XII on July 10, 1952, and ordained/installed on October 7, 1952. He chose the episcopal motto "Sursum Corda" (Lift up your hearts).

His legacy remains closely tied to the Bicol region, where he is remembered for his dedication to spiritual growth and his leadership during a pivotal time for both the Diocese of Sorsogon and the Archdiocese of Caceres.

COME, LET US CELEBRATE 75 YEARS OF GRACE!

The Diocese of Sorsogon warmly invites all the faithful to gather as one diocesan family for the 75th Jubilee Pontifical Mass and the Convocation of the Second Diocesan Synod on the Solemnity of our patrons, Saints Peter and Paul.

📅 29 June 2026
🕘 9:00 AM
📍 Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Sorsogon City

The Pontifical Mass will be presided over by His Excellency Charles Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, together with His Excellency Tito Yllana, Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus to Israel, and the concelebrating bishops and priests.

As “Pilgrims of Hope journeying towards the Year of Grace,” let us come together in thanksgiving for the blessings of the past seventy-five years and entrust the continuing mission of our local Church to the Lord.

On this historic occasion, we shall also convoke the Second Diocesan Synod, guided by the Lord’s enduring promise:

“I am with you always.” — Matthew 28:20

Come and celebrate with us in faith, hope, and love.

Members of the Association of Consecrated Persons in Sorsogon (ACPIS) came together today at the Poor Clare Monastery to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi. Apart from the Jubilee conference and the Holy Mass, the association also held its election for a new set of officers to lead the community forward.
Praying for abundant blessings upon our new ACPIS officers and all our consecrated souls!
