FOR YOUR IKAAALAM: What Takes Place At Church During Holy Saturday?

The night of Black Saturday eventually dispel the darkness. It is called the “Easter Vigil” and in it the following are observed:

• Before the assembly inside the Church, the "Service of Light" is first conducted. A bonfire is set up in the Church yard, and the priest blesses the fire. Water is to be blessed through the immersion of the Paschal Candle to the main water jar, to be used as holy water. The same water is used in the baptism of the catechumens / unbaptized converts, and sprinkled to the entire congregation in the Renewal of
the Baptismal Promises.

• This huge candle will be lighted in the liturgies throughout the Easter Season. The sacred fire shall light the wick of the candle and its flame shall be distributed to the faithful present. For this purpose, the faithful must be advised beforehand to bring his or her own candle.

• The priest or deacon will sing or recite the Exsultet, an Easter proclamation of Christ's victory. Church readings and psalms shall be read in seven succession. After that, the Gloria is sung together with the lighting of the whole church, along with the resumption of the use of the altar bells.

On Holy Saturday, the Church is, as it were, at the Lord’s tomb, meditating on his passion and death and on his descent into hell, awaiting his resurrection with prayer and fasting. It is highly recommended that on this day, the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer be celebrated with the participation of the people Where this cannot be done, there should be some celebration of the word of God or some act of devotion suited to the mystery celebrated this day.
The image of Christ crucified or lying in the tomb or the descent into hell, which mystery Holy Saturday recalls, as also an image of the sorrowful Virgin Mary, can be placed in the church for the veneration of the faithful.
On this day, the Church abstains strictly from celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass. Holy Communion may only be given in the form of Viaticum. The celebration of marriages is forbidden, as is also the celebration of other sacraments, except those of penance and the anointing of the sick.
The faithful are to be instructed on the special character of Holy Saturday. 7Festive customs and traditions associated with this day because of the former practice of anticipating the celebration of Easter on Holy Saturday should be reserved for Easter night and the day that follows.
