STOP TAKING VERSES OUT OF CONTEXT
It's that time of year where we start quoting Bible verses out of context for our "New Year manifesting." Jeremiah 29:11 is not about you. Deuteronomy 31:8 is not about me. Joshua 1:9 isn't directed toward us.
If we want to know what *God* actually intends to teach us from His Word, rather than whatever we want it to say, we need context.
The Bible is GOD'S WORD intended to transform broken humanity into Christ's likeness, not a TRANSFORMER intended to manipulate Christ's likeness into humanity's brokenness.
EISEGESIS means you are interpreting the Bible in whatever context you personally want, from whatever perspective you want to see it from, to put into the text whatever meaning you want it to mean.
This is the IMPROPER, UNFAITHFUL, and DANGEROUS interpretive method.
EXEGESIS means you are interpreting the Bible in its proper context, from the right perspective, to draw from the text what God intended it to mean when He inspired its writing.
This is the PROPER, FAITHFUL, and SAFE interpretive method.
When we do EISEGESIS we skew the perspective of the Bible so that it no longer reflects what it was originally intended to reflect.
In other words, we show to the world a picture of the Bible that is not true to reality, but the world thinks it is because that is how we present it to them.
We do NOT get to make the Bible say whatever we want it to say and twist its meaning to our own satisfaction.
The Bible is God's Word and its meant to be interpreted to reveal the meaning GOD intended for it, not the meaning you intended for it. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Remember: EISEGESIS obscures the original meaning of the text by showing an improper perspective out of its context(s) while EXEGESIS reveals the original meaning of the text by showing the proper perspective and context(s).
Be a faithful student of the Bible. Do exegesis, not eisegesis.
