BE IN THE KNOW | Lenten vs. Advent Purple
Mga bok at ter, we are now within the Lenten period. In line with this, most of HugotSeminarista's Be In The Know: Tidbits of Catholic Knowledge will provide more information entries about the season. On this day, our post is about the liturgical color purple.
We know that in liturgical colors, violet symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. In vestments, this color is also used at funerals because of its connection to mourning. In the liturgical calendar, we use violet during these two seasons: LENT and ADVENT. And they have difference!
Lent uses purple with red tones, termed as "Roman purple". Red symbolizes blood, and the red tones in Lent purple remind us of the blood that was shed by Christ.
On the other hand, Advent involves blue-purple, also termed as "blue-hour purple". Purple normally drapes the sky two times a day: at twilight, just before sunrise and after sunset. Twilight is known as "the blue hour" by photographers and artists due to the softness of light and prominence of blue tones. Advent is a "twilight period", when a hush falls as we await for the coming of the "sun" (the Son of God).
