LITURGICAL NOTE
On the Consecration of the Philippines to the Divine Mercy

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), last 24 March 2026, sent a Circular (No. 26-03) announcing a Renewal of the National Consecration to the Divine Mercy on the Second Sunday of Easter, 12 April 2026 in response to our current national and global crises.

The letter enjoins all dioceses, parishes, religious communities, and Catholic institutions to partake in this spiritual initiative.

At all Masses on Divine Mercy Sunday, the Prayer of Consecration is to be prayed in place of the General Intercessions (Prayers of the Faithful).

Copies of the Prayer of Consecration in English and Cebuano can be found on the next post.

LITURGICAL NOTE
On the Easter Octave

The Solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection is so significant and great that its festivities extend and overflow for 8 days. This is called the Easter Octave.

“The first eight days of Easter Time constitute the Octave of Easter and are celebrated as Solemnities of the Lord.”
-Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, n. 24

For the next few days, the Gloria is sung or recited and the Alleluia is appended to the Dismissal.

By the Church’s ancient tradition, the entire Christian people must rejoice and be glad for the Lord has risen from the dead! Thus, FASTING IS PROHIBITED and FEASTING IS ENCOURAGED.

LITURGICAL NOTE
On the Easter Sequence and Posture

At all Masses for Easter Sunday and Octave (the days following until the next Sunday), before the singing of the Gospel Acclamation, the Sequence “Victimae paschali” must be recited or sung at all Masses.

While there are no rubrics prescribed as to whether the people should sit or stand during the Sequence,
“[T]he fact that the sequence is now intentionally placed before the Alleluia would indicate that the sequence is also sung seated.”
-Fr. Edward McNamara, LC
Professor of Liturgy, Regina Aposolotum University

LITURGICAL NOTE
On the Blessing of Water during Easter Vigil

The Water blessed during the Easter Vigil will be used for BAPTIZING candidates for Baptism and Sprinkling the baptized faithful when they renew their baptismal vows.

IT IS NOT A SACRAMENTAL TO BE GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE.

The practice where people place bottles and jugs of water together with the water to be blessed during the Vigil should be stopped and weaned out.

To help transition this change, priests may bless the people’s bottles and jugs of water after the Vigil using the usual blessing of water found in the Book of Blessings (1388-1395).
