LITURGICAL NOTE
On the Solemnity of the Assumption and the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This year, the Solemnity of the Assumption falls on a Saturday. In the evening of the preceding Friday (Aug 14), the First Vespers and the Mass Propers shall be taken from the Vigil Mass of the Solemnity.

Obligatory Memorial of St. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr is celebrated in the Morning and Afternoon of August 14.

CLARIFICATION: Since the Solemnity of the Assumption ranks higher than the 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time, the evening of August 15 shall still be that of the Assumption, and thus there is no “anticipation” of the next Sunday but the Sunday Obligation may still be fulfilled with the evening Mass of that Saturday. (cf. UNLYC 61)

*The Obligatory Memorial of St. Rock (Roque), Healer, is not celebrated this year except in places where he is the Titular such as the San Roque Parish in Banban, Siquijor.

QUESTIONS FROM THE SACRISTY

"In the Entrance Procession, where is the Book of the Gospels positioned?"

Whether it is the Reader or the Deacon who carries the Book of the Gospels, it is always positioned after the lay ministers (servers, readers, EMHCs) and before the ordained ministers (deacons, priests, and bishops)* [cf. GIRM 120, 172; CB 128].

*If there are clergy in attendance who are not serving nor concelebrating, they are positioned before the Book of the Gospels [cf. CB 128].
