WHY DOES SAN ROQUE HAVE A DOG AND AN ANGEL?

One of the most recognizable symbols of San Roque (Saint Roch) is the faithful dog at his side. But why?

According to tradition, while caring for victims of the plague, San Roque himself became sick and withdrew to a secluded place so he would not infect others. There, a dog would come to him each day carrying bread, helping sustain him during his illness.

The dog's owner eventually followed the animal, discovered San Roque, and cared for him.

The angel, meanwhile, represents God's heavenly assistance and care during San Roque's suffering and illness. Together, the dog and angel remind us of God's providence and loving presence in times of suffering.

Because of this tradition, San Roque is often depicted with a dog, bread, and an angel.

San Roque, pray for us!

๐—ฆ๐—”๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง ๐—ข๐—™ ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐——๐—”๐—ฌ | Saint Roch of Montpellier
Patron Saint of Barangay San Roque

The Memorial of St. Roch of Montpellier, which is ordinarily celebrated today, is superseded by the Sunday liturgy.

He was born in 1295 to a rich family in Montpellier, France. Tradition says Saint Roch was born with a birthmark of a red cross on his chest. He joined the Franciscan Order and distributed his fortune among the poor. While living in Italy, he caught the plague while ministering to the sick and was expelled from the town. Ill and starving, he was saved when a hunting dog found him and brought him bread every day.
He recovered and decided to devote himself to caring for the sick. After his recovery, Saint Roch returned to Montpellier, France. His uncle, the governor, did not recognize him and cast him into prison as a spy. After five years in the prison, he died, stretched out on the ground and after receiving the Last Sacraments.
He was recognized by the red cross on his chest, and his true identity was then known. Saint Roch was reputed to have performed many miracles of healing throughout his life. Saint Roch is usually portrayed holding a clapper to warn people of his approach and with a sore on his leg. He is always pictured with a dog.

O Blessed St Roch, Patron of the sick, have pity on those who lie upon a bed of suffering. Your power was so great when you were in this world, that by the sign of the Cross, many were healed of their diseases. Now that you are in heaven, your power is no less. Offer to God our sighs and tears and obtain for us the physical and spiritual health we seek: (Share your requestโ€ฆ) This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A DOG, A TORCH, AND A SAINT | Ever wondered where Dominicans got their iconic nickname and symbol, the dog holding a flaming torch?

You may not notice it in famous paintings depicting Saint Dominic, but there is often a cute little hound resting at the saint's feet, holding a blazing torch in its mouth.

Meet Saint Dominic de Guzman, a Spaniard, the man who set the world ablaze with the truth of the Gospel.

Dominic de Guzman was born on August 8, 1170, in Caleruega, Spain. Prior to his birth, his mother had a vision of a dog holding a flaming torch in its mouth.

According to tradition, Blessed Jane of Aza dreamed of a dog leaping from her womb, carrying a flaming torch. In the dream, the dog ran across the earth, setting it ablaze. When she shared the dream, a holy monk interpreted it as a sign that her son would set the world on fire ; not with destruction, but with the light of Christโ€™s truth.

In fact, the word โ€˜Dominicanโ€™ is a play on the Latin, Domini canes, which means โ€˜dogs of the Lord.โ€™

Throughout his life, St. Dominic fulfilled that prophetic dream. He founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) to combat false teachings, not through violence or force, but through prayer, study, poverty, and relentless preaching of the Truth.

Like faithful hounds of God, Dominic and his friars guarded the flock of Christ, carrying the light of faith into the darkest corners of the world.

St. Dominicโ€™s life reminds us that we are all called to carry the light of Christ wherever we go.

In a world often darkened by division and confusion, our faith should not be hidden. Rather, it should be a torch that ignites truth, hope, and love in the hearts of others.

Saint Dominic de Guzman, Pray for us!

Jesus takes the three disciples Peter, John and James sons of Zebedee up a high mountain (traditionally believed to be Mount Tabor). While there, His appearance is transformedโ€”His face shines like the sun and His clothes become dazzling white. Then, Moses and Elijah appear and speak with Him, representing the Law and the Prophets.

A bright cloud overshadows them, and a voice from the cloud (God the Father) says:
โ€œThis is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.โ€

The disciples are terrified and fall to the ground, but Jesus comforts them. When they look up, they see only Jesus, and the moment ends. This event strengthens the disciplesโ€™ faith and reveals Jesusโ€™ divine identity before His crucifixion.

Lord Jesus, transform us to be more like You. Have mercy on us!

The siblings of Bethanyโ€”Martha, Mary, and Lazarusโ€”were close friends and devoted followers of Jesus. They lived in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem, and are often remembered for their hospitality, faith, and personal relationship with Christ. Their story highlights different expressions of discipleship: service (Martha), contemplation (Mary), and witness to Godโ€™s power (Lazarus). Together, they show a complete picture of faith lived through action, devotion, and trust in God.

1. Martha โ€“ The Faithful Servant

Martha is best known for her hospitality and service. In the Gospel, she welcomed Jesus into their home and busied herself with preparing and serving, showing her dedication through action. However, she also experienced a moment of struggle when she became overwhelmed and asked Jesus to correct her sister Mary. Jesus gently reminded her that while service is important, spiritual attentiveness matters more. Martha also made a powerful declaration of faith before the raising of Lazarus, proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah.

2. Mary โ€“ The Devoted Listener

Mary is remembered for her deep devotion and contemplative spirit. She chose to sit at Jesusโ€™ feet and listen to His teachings, prioritizing spiritual nourishment over daily tasks. In another moment, she expressed profound love and reverence by anointing Jesusโ€™ feet with expensive perfume and wiping them with her hair. Her actions symbolize humility, love, and the importance of being present with God.

3. Lazarus โ€“ The Living Witness

Lazarus is most famous for being raised from the dead by Jesus after four days in the tomb. His resurrection is one of the most powerful miracles in the Bible, demonstrating Jesusโ€™ authority over death and affirming Him as โ€œthe resurrection and the life.โ€ Though Lazarus speaks little in Scripture, his life became a testimony that led many to believe in Jesus.

Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, the Bethany siblings, patrons of strengthening the bond among siblings, pray for us!
