The feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954 with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam. Originally celebrated on May 31, it was moved to August 22 by Pope Paul VI after the Second Vatican Council to highlight its connection with the Assumption: Mary's heavenly glorification is fittingly followed by her recognition as Queen.
The feast honors Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, not because she is equal to God, but because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. In the biblical tradition, the mother of the Davidic king held the office of the queen mother (gebirah), interceding for the people (see 1 Kings 2:19โ20). Christians see Mary as the fulfillment of this role in Christ's kingdom.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
