St. Maria Faustina Kowalska (1905โ1938) was a Polish religious sister and the Apostle of Divine Mercy. Born Helena Kowalska on August 25, 1905, in Gลogowiec, Poland, she was the third of ten children. From a young age, she felt called to religious life.
In 1925, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, taking the name Sister Maria Faustina. Though she lived an outwardly simple lifeโserving as a cook, gardener, and porterโshe experienced a profound spiritual life centered on God's mercy.
Jesus entrusted St. Faustina with a special mission to proclaim God's Divine Mercy to the world. She recorded her spiritual experiences in her Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul. Through her, the devotion to the Divine Mercy Image, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Hour of Mercy, and Divine Mercy Sunday spread throughout the Church.
St. Faustina died in Krakรณw on October 5, 1938, at the age of 33. She was beatified in 1993 and canonized by Pope St. John Paul II on April 30, 2000. Her feast day is celebrated on October 5.
