Tetelestai — Finished Work & True Grace
Text: John 19:28‑30; Hebrews 10:14; Romans 6:1‑2; 1 John 1:8‑9
Theme: “It is finished” — secure standing, but never license to sin
🎯 INTRO
From the cross rang out one word that changed everything: Tetelestai.
Not a gasp of weakness — a shout of absolute victory. Jesus spoke it BEFORE He died, proving: The debt was paid, the work complete — no extra suffering, no descent into hell to finish the job later.
Yet many twist this truth:
*“If every sin — past, present, future — was already forgiven then… why repent? Why confess? Why not live however I please?”*
Today: Grace is free — but never careless grace.
📌 WHAT “FINISHED” REALLY MEANS
Tetelestai means literally: “PAID IN FULL — CASE CLOSED FOREVER.”
Grammar confirms it: Perfect‑Passive‑Indicative → Done once; result stands unchangeable.
Three things were sealed forever:
✅ Sin’s penalty removed: Wrath exhausted; record nailed to the cross — no balance left.
✅ Law‑shadows ended: No more repeated sacrifices; New Covenant established.
✅ Standing secured: Justification = God’s legal verdict: “NOT GUILTY — DECLARED RIGHTEOUS” — received simply by faith, held securely by His hand (Rom 8:38‑39; Jn 10:28‑29).
⚖️ THE BALANCE THAT STOPS ABUSE
Here is the key distinction that solves the confusion: Forgiveness works in TWO clear dimensions — never mix them:
✅ LEGAL / ACCOMPLISHED — ONCE FOR ALL
Finished at Calvary
Penalty gone forever; standing safe
Unchangeable — depends entirely on Him
✨ RELATIONAL / APPLIED — DAILY & ACTIVE
Fellowship can still be blocked by unconfessed sin
Requires our response: seeing, grieving, turning
Not to earn salvation again — but to keep the heart‑path open
❌ FALSE GRACE: “All forgiven anyway → sin freely” → Scripture shouts NO!
*“Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? GOD FORBID!”* — Rom 6:2
Unrepentant habit reveals: You never truly trusted His work to change you.
✅ TRUE REPENTANCE: Not re‑paying what is already paid — simply agreeing with God: “Lord, this does not belong to the One who bought me.” Confession clears the way; grace flows fresh.
🎯 CONCLUSION
Hebrews 10:14 is our anchor:
“By one offering He perfected FOREVER them that are BEING SANCTIFIED.”
✅ Standing: PERFECTED ONCE — never work TO BE saved.
⚠️ Life: BEING CHANGED NOW — always work BECAUSE you are saved.
Grace is freedom FROM condemnation… never freedom TO sin.
Trust the finished work fully. When you stumble — run straight back to Tetelestai: payment is there, mercy is ready, and the way home is open.
