St. Monica
August 27 | Memorial

MONICA, the mother of Saint Augustine, was born in 332. After a childhood of singular innocence and piety, she was given in marriage to Patritius, a pagan. She at once devoted herself to his conversion, praying for him always, and winning his reverence and love by the holiness of her life and her affectionate forbearance. She was rewarded by seeing him baptized a year before his death. When her son Augustine went astray in faith and manners her prayers and tears were incessant. She was once very urgent with a learned bishop that he would talk to her son in order to bring him to a better mind, but he declined, despairing of success with one at once so able and so headstrong. However, on witnessing her prayers and tears, he told her to be of good courage; for it might not be that the child of those tears should perish. By going to Italy, Augustine could for a time free himself from his motherโ€™s importunities; but he could not escape from her prayers, which encompassed him like the providence of God. She followed him to Italy, where he came under the influence of Saint Ambrose, and there by, his marvellous conversion, her sorrow was turned into joy. At Ostia, on their homeward journey, as Augustine and his mother sat at a window conversing of the life of the blessed, she turned to him and said, โ€œSon, there is nothing now I care for in this life. What I shall now do or why I am here, I know not. The one reason I had for wishing to linger in this life a little longer was that I might see you a Catholic Christian before I died. This has God granted me superabundantly in seeing you reject earthly happiness to become His servant. What am I to do here?โ€ A few days afterwards she had an attack of fever, and died in the year 387.

St. Bartholomew
August | 24 | Apostle

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW was one of the twelve who were called to the apostolate by our blessed Lord himself. Several learned interpreters of the Holy Scripture take this apostle to have been the same as Nathaniel, a native of Cana, in Galilee, a doctor in the Jewish law, and one of the seventy-two disciples of Christ, to whom he was conducted by Saint Philip, and whose innocence and simplicity of heart deserved to be celebrated by the mouth of our Redeemer himself. He is mentioned among the disciples who were met together in prayer after Christโ€™s ascension, and he received the Holy Spirit with the rest. Being eminently qualified by the divine grace to discharge the functions of an apostle, he was reported, by various ancient traditions, to have carried the gospel through the most barbarous countries of the East, penetrating into the remoter Indies. He returned again into the northwest part of Asia, and met Saint Philip at Hierapolis, in Phrygia. Hence he traveled into Lycaonia, where he instructed the people in the Christian Faith; but we know not even the names of many of the countries in which he preached. Saint Bartholomewโ€™s last removal was traditionally into Great Armenia, where, preaching in a place obstinately addicted to the worship of idols, he was crowned with a glorious martyrdom. The modern Greek historians say that he was condemned by the governor of Albanopolis to be crucified. Others affirm that he was flayed alive, which might well enough consist with his crucifixion, this double punishment being in use not only in Egypt, but also among the Persians.

2nd Patroness of the Philippines

St. Rose of Lima was the first canonized saint of the New World and is most well known as the patroness of Latin America and the Philippines.

Her real name was Isabel, but she was so beautiful that she was called Rose.

As Rose grew up, her beauty became an issue for her because she did not want her beauty to be a temptation to people around her. One day, her mother put a wreath of flowers to show off her beauty but Rose didnโ€™t want to be admired for her beauty because she had given her heart to Jesus. So, she put a pin into the floral wreath and pierced her head deeply. Another time, she rubbed her face with pepper until it was red and blistered to make herself less beautiful.

Rose refused to marry even though her parents wanted her to. She had such a great love for Jesus that when she talked about Him, her face glowed and her eyes sparkled.

She had many temptations from the devil and there were times when she suffered because she felt that God was far away. Nevertheless, Rose offered these troubles to God. When she was sick before she died, she would pray, โ€œLord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase Your love in my heartโ€.

Many miracles followed her death and she was canonized in 1671. Her feast day is the 23rd of August.

Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 22 | Memorial

Venerable Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Maryโ€™s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Maryโ€™s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary โ€œmother of my Lord.โ€ As in all the mysteries of Maryโ€™s life, Mary is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesusโ€™ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court.

In the fourth century Saint Ephrem called Mary โ€œLadyโ€ and โ€œQueenโ€ and Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries address Mary as queen: โ€œHail, Holy Queen,โ€ โ€œHail, Queen of Heaven,โ€ โ€œQueen of Heaven.โ€ The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Maryโ€™s litany celebrate her queenship.

The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Venerable Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesusโ€™ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power.

Friday Devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus

I give myself and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being other than to honor, love and glorify the Sacred Heart. This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all His, and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him. I therefore take You, O Sacred heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assurance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life and my sure refuge at the hour of death. Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the strokes of his righteous anger. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in You, for I fear everything from my own wickedness and frailty, but I hope for all things from Your goodness and bounty. Remove from me all that can displease You or resist Your holy will; let your pure love imprint Your image so deeply upon my heart, that I shall never be able to forget You or to be separated from You. May I obtain from all Your loving kindness the grace of having my name written in Your Heart, for in You I desire to place all my happiness and glory, living and dying in bo***ge to You.
Amen.
