Saint Lawrence is one of the most beloved and revered martyrs in the Catholic Church. Born in Spain around the year 225, he was ordained as one of the seven deacons of Rome under Pope Sixtus II.

A Life of Service

As a deacon, Lawrence was responsible for the Church's material possessions and, most importantly, for distributing alms to the poor. He was known for his deep compassion and generosity towards the needy, embodying the Christian principle of charity.

Martyrdom

The Roman Emperor Valerian initiated a severe persecution of Christians in 258. Pope Sixtus II and his deacons, including Lawrence, were arrested and martyred. While Sixtus was immediately beheaded, Lawrence's martyrdom was particularly gruesome and inspiring.
When ordered to surrender the Church's treasures to the Roman prefect, Lawrence presented the poor and sick, whom he had cared for, declaring, "These are the treasures of the Church." Enraged, the prefect ordered Lawrence to be roasted alive on a gridiron, a form of torture associated with cooking. According to tradition, Lawrence endured the excruciating pain with courage and even humor, saying, "Turn me over, I'm done on this side!"

Legacy

Saint Lawrence's unwavering faith, compassion for the poor, and courageous martyrdom have made him a powerful symbol of Christian perseverance. He is the patron saint of deacons, cooks, comedians, and the poor. His feast day is celebrated on August 10th.

Most Rev. Herman G. Abcede, RCJ, D.D., Bishop of Daet, together with our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Erwin J. De Velez, presided over the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to our 64 confirmands. Through the renewal of their baptismal promises and profession of faith in the Catholic Church, they publicly affirmed their commitment to Christ. Bishop Herman then sealed each confirmand with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, empowering them to deepen their faith and faithfully carry out their mission as disciples of the Lord.

Our Parish Night became even more meaningful as it coincided with the Coronation of Mutya ng Parokya 2026, the recognition of our Hermanidad 2026, and the much-awaited Raffle Draw. It was a night filled with joy, gratitude, and celebration, bringing together parishioners from different communities in a beautiful expression of faith and fellowship.

More than the crowns, honors, and prizes, this gathering reflected the true essence of our parish life, a vibrant manifestation of communion and participation, where every parishioner came together as one family in Christ. Through our shared laughter, conversations, and celebrations, we strengthened the bonds that unite us in faith, love, and service.

Tomorrow, August 2, 2026, many parishes and communities celebrate Vianney Sunday, honoring Saint John Vianney ahead of his feast day on Tuesday, August 4.

Today, we give thanks for our priestsβ€”the shepherds who celebrate the Holy Mass, administer the Sacraments, preach God's Word, and faithfully guide His people. May the Lord strengthen them with wisdom, holiness, and joyful perseverance in their vocation.

Let us remember to pray for all priests, especially our parish priests, that through the intercession of St. John Vianney, they may remain faithful, humble, and zealous servants of Christ.
