Advent candles are an important symbol in Christian tradition, especially during the Advent season, which is the period of preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas. These candles are typically arranged in an Advent wreath, and each candle has its own significance and meaning. Here's a description of the Advent candles and their meanings:
First Advent Candle (Purple or Blue): This candle is often called the "Prophecy Candle" or "Hope Candle." It represents the hope and expectation of the coming Messiah, as foretold by the prophets in the Old Testament.
Second Advent Candle (Purple or Blue): This candle is known as the "Bethlehem Candle" or "Preparation Candle." It symbolizes the preparations made to welcome the Christ child into the world, including Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.
Third Advent Candle (Pink): Also called the "Shepherd Candle" or "Joy Candle," this pink candle represents the joy and rejoicing in the anticipation of Christ's birth. It is often lit on Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent.
Fourth Advent Candle (Purple or Blue): This candle is often referred to as the "Angel Candle" or "Love Candle." It signifies the love of God and the message of the angels who announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.
Fifth Candle (White): Sometimes, there is a fifth candle in the center of the Advent wreath. This is the "Christ Candle." It is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and represents the arrival of Jesus as the Light of the World.
The colors of the candles can vary slightly depending on the tradition or denomination. In some traditions, purple is used for all four outer candles, while others use blue. Pink is reserved for the third candle, and white for the fifth Christ Candle. The lighting of these candles is a central part of the Advent season, with one candle being lit on each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. This act of lighting the candles and reflecting on their meanings is a way for Christians to prepare their hearts and minds for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
