Holy Guardian Angel in Santa Cruz, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟲𝟳𝟴.
The church is also home to a 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹, which has long been honored there with particular devotion. Each year, the faithful celebrate a 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿. This tradition dates back to around 𝟭𝟲𝟳𝟴, when the Provincial Father, 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻, ordered a small hermitage to be built specifically to house the image.
The image remained in that hermitage for many years, where devotion to the Holy Guardian Angel continued to grow. Eventually, it was transferred to the main church, where it became associated with the church's regular religious life and annual celebration.
𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲
The passage is significant because it shows that devotion to the 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟭𝟲𝟳𝟴. Several points stand out:
𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: The construction of a small hermitage specifically for the image indicates that the devotion was important enough to receive itsown sacred space.
𝗔 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The annual solemn feast suggests that devotion was not merely private but had become a recurring 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The image survived the transition from the hermitage to the larger church, preserving the devotion within the community even as the church's physical setting changed.
𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: The order given by 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻, a Franciscan provincial, shows the role of the Franciscan religious hierarchy in organizing and supporting this devotion.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Although the church's principal dedication was to the 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, the passage emphasizes that the Holy Guardian Angel was venerated with particular devotion. This suggests that the angel had a distinct and meaningful place in the spiritual life of the local population.
In short, the Holy Guardian Angel devotion described here represents a 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀-𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁, dating back at least to the late 17th century.
