ALTAR SERVERS’ MONTH 2026
Theme of the Vicariate Celebration:
Audiam, Sequar, et Serviam.
(I will Listen, Follow and Serve the Lord )
The theme for Altar Servers Month, AUDIAM - SEQUAR et SERVIAM, invites us to walk the same path that every disciple of Christ must take: to listen, to follow, and to serve.
AUDIAM. "I will listen."
Service at the altar begins not with action, but with listening. Like Samuel in the temple, the altar server must first say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” To listen is to be attentive — to the Word of God, to the instructions of the priest, to the sacred silence of the Mass. Without listening, our service becomes mere routine. But with listening, we begin to understand that we are not just moving, carrying, and responding. We are accompanying Christ Himself. The altar server who listens learns reverence, and reverence is the foundation of all true service.
SEQUAR. "Follow Me."
After listening comes following. The Lord’s invitation is personal: “Follow Me.” To follow Christ means to walk behind Him not only in the entrance procession, but in our daily lives. It means humility like Christ who washed the feet of His disciples. It means obedience like Christ who said “Not my will, but Yours be done.” It means sacrifice like Christ on the Cross. For us altar servers, sequere reminds us that the Mass does not end at the final blessing. We are called to bring the discipline, prayerfulness, and love we practice in the sacristy into our homes, schools, and community. We follow Christ with our whole life, not just with our hands.
SERVIAM. "To Serve."
Finally, listening and following lead us to serving. Christ Himself came “not to be served, but to serve.” At the altar, we serve the priest, we assist the liturgy, and we help the whole assembly worship God better. But more than that, we serve Christ who is truly present in the Eucharist. True service is done quietly, faithfully, and joyfully. It does not seek applause. It seeks only to give glory to God. Like St. Tarcisius and St. Dominic Savio, young servers who loved the Eucharist so much that they gave everything for it, we too are called to serve with courage and love.
SAINT TARCISIUS
Saint Tarcisius first listened to Christ in the Eucharist, then he followed Christ in charity, and finally he served Christ even to the point of martyrdom.
May we altar servers today imitate him. May we listen well, follow faithfully, and serve generously. And may we also love the Eucharist so much that we are willing to protect it, honor it, and live for it — just as Saint Tarcisius did.
Listen to the Lord. Follow the Lord. Serve the Lord.
This is the journey of the altar servers of the Vicariate of Mary, Help of Christians. And it is also the journey of every Christian. May this month renew in us the grace to be attentive to God’s voice, faithful in following Christ, and generous in serving at His altar and in His Church.
