The name Manaoag is tied to an old local tradition about the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, Mary was said to have appeared to a farmer and was later called “Birhen a managtaoag,” or “the Virgin who calls.” From managtaoag came the shortened name Manaoag, which eventually became the name of the town itself. Today, the shrine remains one of the Philippines’ well-known places of Marian pilgrimage, where devotees come to pray and ask for the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag.

The Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary carries an older name: Our Lady of Victories. After the Christian fleet won the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, Pope St. Pius V established a feast in thanksgiving, linking the victory with prayers offered through the Rosary. Pope Gregory XIII later gave the celebration the title associated with the Holy Rosary. What began as thanksgiving for a historic event became a lasting reminder that the Rosary leads Christians to place their struggles, hopes, and prayers before God with the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On March 25, 1858, during the 16th apparition at Lourdes, Bernadette Soubirous asked the Lady to reveal her name. According to the official Sanctuary of Lourdes, the Lady replied in the local Bigourdan dialect, “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou,” meaning “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Bernadette reportedly did not understand the theological meaning of the phrase and repeated the words as she hurried to tell the parish priest. The declaration was especially significant because Pope Pius IX had formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception only four years earlier, in 1854 (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, 2026).

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?

The story of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of La Naval de Manila reaches back more than four centuries. The image was commissioned by acting Governor-General Luis Pérez Dasmariñas in 1593 and was carved by an unnamed Chinese sculptor under the direction of Hernando de los Ríos Coronel. Historical sources connect the sculptor with Ilocos, although the exact circumstances of his work there are not fully known. The image is made from ivory and wood: the Virgin’s head and hands are ivory and attached to a wooden bastidor-type body. Scholars place the creation of the historic image around 1593–1594, making it an important surviving example of early Philippine religious art and of the artistic exchange between Chinese craftsmen and Spanish colonial culture in the Philippines. The famous scars on the face of Our Lady of Częstochowa are more than an artistic detail. In 1430, robbers attacked the sanctuary at Jasna Góra, stole valuable offerings, and severely damaged the sacred icon. According to the sanctuary’s historical account, the image was slashed with a sword and broken, and after its restoration, the marks on Mary’s face remained as a lasting reminder of the damage. Over the centuries, these scars became one of the most recognizable features of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa and an important symbol in Polish Catholic devotion (Jasna Góra, n.d.; Niedźwiedź, 2010)

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?

The image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, also known as Our Lady of Antipolo, has a history that crosses the Pacific. In 1626, Governor-General Juan Niño de Tabora brought the image from Acapulco, Mexico, to the Philippines during the era of the Manila–Acapulco galleon trade. Over time, the image became closely associated with prayers for safe travel, especially after being carried on several galleon voyages across the Pacific. Today, devotion to Our Lady of Antipolo remains a distinctly Filipino Marian tradition with roots reaching all the way to Mexico.

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?

For centuries, the Rosary was traditionally prayed as 15 decades, or 150 Hail Marys. This number was not chosen by accident. It reflects the 150 Psalms of the Bible, which formed the Church’s ancient Psalter. Pope Paul VI noted this connection, and St. John Paul II later explained that the original structure of the Rosary developed around the number 150. In this way, the Rosary became a simple “Psalter” that ordinary Christians could pray while meditating on the life of Jesus with Mary. Today, even with the addition of the Luminous Mysteries, this older tradition helps us understand why the Rosary was once known as Mary’s Psalter.

The Sanctae Crucis College Youth Ministry proudly introduces its newly appointed officers for the School Year 2026–2027! 🙏

Called to serve, lead, and inspire, these young individuals have accepted the responsibility of becoming instruments of faith, hope, and love within our school community. Their commitment is not simply about holding a position, but about answering a greater call—to serve God and others with humility, dedication, and compassion.

As they begin this new journey, may they continue to be guided by the teachings of Christ and strengthened by their faith in every challenge they face. May their leadership inspire their fellow Crucians to grow closer to God and become active witnesses of His love.

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?

October has long held a special place in Catholic devotion to the Holy Rosary. In 1883, Pope Leo XIII called on Catholics throughout the world to dedicate the month of October to the Holy Queen of the Rosary, encouraging the Rosary to be prayed publicly, privately, and within families. He also directed parishes to pray five decades of the Rosary together with the Litany of Loreto during this period (Leo XIII, 1883). More than a century later, this invitation remains simple and meaningful: make room for the Rosary, meditate on the life of Christ, and ask for Mary’s intercession.
