Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. On this solemnity, the Church joyfully contemplates the woman chosen by the Father to bear His Eternal Son. As Vatican II teaches, Mary’s divine motherhood places her at the very heart of the mystery of Christ, for in giving flesh to the Word, she truly became Theotokos—God-bearer—without diminishing Christ’s divinity or humanity, but proclaiming both.
Through her free and faithful “yes” at the Annunciation, Mary cooperated in God’s saving plan, not by necessity, but by grace. She embraced her vocation with humility and trust, becoming the first disciple and the perfect model of faith. From Bethlehem to Calvary, she remained united to her Son, sharing in His joys and sorrows, and standing firm beneath the Cross where her motherhood was extended to all humanity.
Celebrated at the beginning of the year, this solemnity reminds us that our time, our history, and our future belong to Christ, and that Mary accompanies the Church as a mother and intercessor. Now assumed into heaven, she continues to care for God’s pilgrim people, pointing all hearts to her Son, the Prince of Peace. In honoring Mary as Mother of God, the Church proclaims the central truth of our faith: that God truly entered human history so that humanity might share in His divine life.
Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
