Due to the unavailability of an appropriate and permanent place of worship, the Somascan celebrated Masses on Sundays in open spaces or even on street corners or whenever a number of people could be accommodated. Through the initiative of the good priest and with
the wholehearted support of the parishioners, a small chapel was constructed in Sevilla Street. The Parish was then named in honor of the patron saint of the Somascan Order, St. The construction of the chapel; however, proceeded at a slow pace due to very limited funds. Further, it was observed that the chapel could not accommodate the growing number of parishioners. This led to the decision of the 1981 Chrysanthemum Village Homeowners Association Inc. (CVHAI) officers to find a more suitable and appropriate place of worship to be built. A thorough study of the problem and proper consultation with the officials of the town of San Pedro, Laguna were made. An open space in L. Santos Street was selected and recommended to then Mayor Felicisimo Vierneza. In August 1981, the construction of the new church began. With the untimely withdrawal of the Somascan Fathers in 1985, the Augustinian Fathers took over the administration of the Church with the authority given by the Most Rev. Bantigue, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo. In 1987, through the joint endorsement and recommendation of the Parish Pastoral Council and CVHAI Officers and Directors, the then Mayor Calixto Cataquiz and the Sangguniang Bayan of San Pedro, Laguna, approved the resolution providing for the perpetual use of the open space in L. Santos Street by the Parish. Due to some structural defects in the construction of the Church, major parts of the original edifice were demolished and a new plan was made. Subsequently, a new Church was reconstructed with usually unselfish cooperation and support of the parishioners. Waiting the new Church to be dedicated, blessed and consecrated, the Father provincial of the Order of St. Augustine (OSA) suggested to rename the Church after any of the saints whom the Order consider to be their patron/patroness. The Parish Priest with the officers and members of the Parish Pastoral Council did agree to the idea. After which, the renaming was referred and discussed with the Most Rev. Bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo. In May 1995, an Ad Hoc Committee was created to work on the renaming process. Referendum was conducted with 1,235 parishioners representing around 68% of the active churchgoers in the parish respondents and cooperated in the process. Majority of the respondents preferred the patron, Mother of Good Counsel. The Parish is now 100% completed, dedicated, blessed and consecrated as Mother of Good Counsel Parish Church in April 1999. How this Parish and the Parish Church came to be, one can humbly say that this is a concrete monument and manifestations of everyoneโs cooperation, support, sacrifices and unity, a work of love by both the Augustinian priests and parishioners. It is hoped that the Parish Church of the Mother of Good Counsel will continue to be a symbol of these laudable virtues and will be a perpetual reminder that we belong to this Church as one Mystical Body of Christ.
