WHY IS PENTECOST THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?
Pentecost is called the “birthday of the Church” because it marks the day the Church began its public mission in the world.
After Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles were gathered together in prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary. They were afraid, uncertain, and hiding behind closed doors. But everything changed on Pentecost.
As described in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit descended upon them like a mighty wind and tongues of fire. The apostles were filled with courage, wisdom, and strength. Suddenly, they went out publicly to preach about Jesus Christ.
People from many nations heard the message in their own languages, and about three thousand people were baptized that day. This was the beginning of the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel to all nations.
Pentecost is not simply the celebration of an event from the past. It reminds us that the Church is alive because the Holy Spirit is alive within her.
The same Spirit who strengthened the apostles continues to guide the Church today:
- through preaching and teaching
- through the sacraments
- through the lives of the saints
- and through ordinary Christians who live their faith with courage and love
Just as birth marks the beginning of life, Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church’s life and mission in the world.
