JASHIL CHOI (1915-1989)
After the communists took over North Korea, Jashil Choi and her family fled to South Korea. Her husband, who was a womanizer, left her for another woman. Her daughter died in an accident. And she lost her devout mother. After more than 25 years in the church, she became so desperate that she tried to commit su***de. She met an old friend who invited her to attend a tent crusade. She went and soon realized that the minister who was preaching was the very one who led her and her mom to Christ 25 years ago. She immediately yielded her life to the Lord and started learning more about fasting and prayer. She was healed from depression, diabetes and insomnia and at the age of 41, she enrolled in the Assemblies of God Bible school in Seoul, South Korea.
Jashil Choi met Paul Yonggi Cho in the Assemblies of God bible school in the late 40’s. He was half her age and she became a mentor to him. She taught him the secrets of prayer. She prayed for him twice when he was very ill. She would also pioneer and co-pastor a tent church with Yonggi Cho in one of the poorest areas of Seoul that would one day become the largest church in the world. Yonggi would later marry Jashil’s daughter.
Jashil Cho prayed for over ten years for the return of her husband who had left her to go live with another woman. He would soon come back to her and would later become Paul Yonggi Cho’s right hand man in the ministry. She started the Prayer Mountain movement and also a small family gathering that became the largest church in the world with Yonggi Cho, her son in law.
The church started growing after Yonggi Cho and Jashil Choi started praying for the sick in their neighborhood.
