FLORES DE MAYO VS. SANTACRUZAN
Many Filipinos often hear the terms Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan used together, yet they are not exactly the same. Flores de Mayo is a month-long Catholic devotion celebrated throughout May in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where the faithful offer flowers, pray the Rosary, and gather for Marian prayers and catechesis. Its primary focus is spiritual devotion, encouraging Catholics to deepen their love for Mary and imitate her virtues of humility, obedience, and faithfulness to God.
Santacruzan, on the other hand, is the religious procession traditionally held at the conclusion of Flores de Mayo. It commemorates the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, while also honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary through symbolic biblical and historical representations. Participants, often dressed as queens and figures representing Christian virtues and titles of Mary, join a solemn yet festive public expression of faith rooted in Catholic tradition.
In simple terms, Flores de Mayo is the devotion, while Santacruzan is the culminating procession that usually crowns the celebration. One focuses on prayer and spiritual formation throughout the month, while the other visibly manifests that faith through a community procession rich in symbolism and catechesis. Together, they remind the faithful that devotion to Mary should lead not only to external celebration, but also to a deeper commitment to Christ and the life of the Church.
