My personal Insight on Philippine Independence Day in Light of Recent Events:
Every June 12, the Filipino nation commemorates Philippine Independence Day, marking our declaration of freedom from Spanish colonial rule in 1898. It is a day meant to celebrate sovereignty, national pride, and the enduring spirit of the Filipino people.
But more than just waving flags and patriotic speeches, Independence Day invites us to ask: Are we truly free today? Have we achieved the independence our heroes died for?
Freedom Beyond Colonial Chains:
While we are no longer under foreign rule, modern independence goes beyond political sovereignty. It is about:
Freedom from corruption
Freedom from injustice
Freedom from poverty
Freedom to speak truthfully
Freedom to live with dignity
When we look at recent events, such as the Senate impeachment proceedings, we are once again reminded that our democracy—though intact on paper—is still fragile and often manipulated by power struggles and vested interests.
What the Impeachment Proceedings Revea:l
The recent impeachment drama (presumably about controversies around high-ranking official) shows:
The persistence of political patronage, where loyalty sometimes outweighs truth.
The fragility of our institutions, especially when public trust in the legislative bodies is compromised.
A deep hunger for accountability, not just from those in power, but from the very citizens who elected them.
Even if the process followed constitutional channels, the motive, transparency, and integrity behind it are what truly test the maturity of our independence.
So, Have We Achieved Independence?
In form, yes—we are an independent republic.
But in substance, the struggle continues. The fight for genuine independence is now internal—from apathy, corruption, and the wounds of systemic inequality. When justice is selective and truth is politicized, independence becomes a symbolic celebration rather than a lived reality.

A Call for True Patriotism
As Filipinos, and as faithful Christians, we must renew our commitment to building a nation where freedom is not just a constitutional right but a shared moral responsibility.
Let our celebration of Independence Day go beyond rituals. Let it lead to:
Courage to speak the truth, even when it's unpopular.
Determination to demand justice, especially for the voiceless.
Faithfulness to serve the common good, not personal gain.
Only then can we say we are truly free—not just from colonizers, but from the chains we allow to bind us today.
