David knew what was right. He loved God and had experienced His presence, but he still fell into sin. After taking Bathsheba and arranging for Uriah’s death, David tried to cover what he had done.
Then Nathan the prophet confronted him.
Nathan told David a story about a rich man who took a poor man’s only lamb. David became angry and immediately recognized the injustice.
Then Nathan said,
You are the man!
— 2 Samuel 12:7
David could see the wrong in someone else’s story, but he failed to see what was happening in his own heart.
Sometimes, we can be like David. We’re quick to notice other people’s mistakes, but slow to admit our own. We justify our actions, minimize our compromises, or simply get too comfortable with things God is asking us to change.
But when God exposes something in us, it isn’t to shame us. It’s an opportunity to come back to Him.
David’s response was repentance. He stopped hiding and asked God to change his heart.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
— Psalm 51:10
Maybe God is revealing something in your heart right now. Don’t ignore it. Don’t defend it.
Let Him show you what needs to change, then let Him make your heart new.
