Vision of the National Catechetical Framework

FORMING EVANGELIZED AND EVANGELIZING CATECHISTS FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH

We often speak about forming catechists so that they can teach others. But perhaps we need to begin with something more basic: before we can evangelize, we ourselves need to be evangelized.

A catechist also needs to hear the Gospel again and again. We also need to be formed, challenged, accompanied, and brought closer to Jesus. We cannot give what we ourselves have not received.

This is why catechist formation cannot simply be about seminars, lessons, methods, and certificates. These are important, but formation must also touch the person of the catechist: our prayer, our relationship with Jesus, our understanding of the faith, the way we serve, and the way we live with others.

And we do this together.

In a synodal Church, the catechist is not a lone teacher standing in front of people. We walk with them. We listen to their stories. We learn from one another. We accompany families, children, young people, and communities in their actual joys and struggles.

Perhaps this is the kind of catechist we need today: someone who continues to be evangelized while evangelizing others; someone who remains a disciple while helping form disciples.

Because catechesis begins not only with what we teach, but with the kind of Christian we are becoming.

This September, as we celebrate National Evangelization and Catechetical Month 2026, may we continue forming catechists who know the faith, live the faith, share the faith, and above all, walk together in faith.
