In 1755 the first structure of wood and thatch was built on this site by the Augustinian friars under the patronage of San Fernando III, King of Castile. Fray Sebastian Moreno, O.S.A. was its first cura parroco. On October 17, 1757, townsfolk petitioned the governor-general for exemptions from tribute to enable them to build the church and convent. It was transferred to the care of secular priests

in 1788. The construction of the present church started during the same year under the supervision Fr. Manuel Canlas, its first secular cura parroco, and a committee composed of the principales of the town. They were led by gobernadorcillo Bernabe Pamintuan. Construction was completed in 1808. The church was rededicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. President Emilio F. Aguinaldo and his cabinet viewed the Philippine Revolutionary Army from the windows of the convento on October 9, 1898. On orders of Gen. Antonio Luna, the Philippine Revolutionary Army burned the church and convento on May 4, 1899. It was destroyed by fire again in 1939, and later restored by architect Fernando H. In 1948 the church was elevated to Cathedral when it became the seat of the Diocese of San Fernando, canonically created by Pope Pius XII. In 1975, the diocese was elevated by Pope Paul VI, to Archdiocese of San Fernando. Its first bishop was Monsignor Cesar Ma. Guerrero, D.D. He was followed by the Most Reverend Emilio A. Cinense, D.D., who became its first archbishop. He was succeeded by the Most Reverend Oscar V. Cruz, D.D. in 1978. The third and current archbishop of San Fernando is the Most Reverend Florentino G. Lavarias, D.D. Pamp[1]
The present church may have been built by the end of the 18th century, constructed most probably by Fr. Sebastian Moreno, its parish priest in 1756, and was restored in 1808. The church measures 70m. long, 13m. wide and 11m. high. The round majestic dome rising from the rotanda of the transept is reminiscent of the baroque style with some renaissance touch. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of the City of San Fernando, Pampanga. Aguinaldo and his cabinet viewed the Phillippine Revolutionary Army from the windows of the convento on October 9, 1898. The church and the convento were burned by the Philippine Revolutionary Army on orders of Gen. Antonio Luna on May 4, 1899. It was again destroyed by fire in 1939, and later restored by Pampango Architect Fernando H. Ocampo in 1948. It was canonically erected on June 25, 1975. The looming structure of white, beige, gray and maroon may look ancient, but both exterior and interior are relatively new, really neo-Art Nouveau with faux columns

On February 11, 1956, Bishop Cesar Ma. Guerrero petitioned Cardinal Federico Tedeschini, then the Apostolic Datary to Pope Pius XII, requesting the grant of a ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ for the image of the Virgen de los Remedios. Pope Pius XII approved the petition and, on July 15, 1956, issued the ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ (๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ) authorizing the Canonical Coronation of the Virgen de los Remediosโ€”one of the highest honors the Catholic Church can bestow upon a venerated image of devotion. This decree granted pontifical authority for the image to be solemnly crowned in the name and by the authority of the Pope.

The solemn Canonical Coronation took place on ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ 8, 1956, becoming one of the most historic and significant religious celebrations in Pampanga. An estimated 70,000 people gathered at the Pampanga Provincial Grounds, amidst the pouring rain, to witness the coronation of their revered Indu ning Kapaldanan. The ceremony was officiated by Most Rev. Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines and representative of Pope Pius XII, with the assistance of Governor Rafael Lazatin, in a ceremony authorized by the Holy See.

More than a historic crowning, the event celebrated the success of the Crusade of Penance and Charity, which had inspired peace, reconciliation, and renewed faith throughout the province. It became a beacon of hope for countless devotees, offering them strength and comfort during times of despair and hardship through the maternal intercession of the Virgen de los Remedios, the Queen and Mother of Pampanga.

Through the Pontifical Decree and the solemn coronation, the Virgen de los Remedios, affectionately revered as the Indu ning Kapampangan, became the 11th pontifically crowned Marian image in the Philippines. As of this writing, there are 65 pontifically crowned Marian images in the country. The Canonical Coronation signified the unwavering devotion of the Kapampangan people to the Virgen de los Remedios, establishing a lasting legacy that has been faithfully passed down through generations.

This enduring Marian devotion remains evident in the countless devotees who gather every year to commemorate its anniversaryโ€”a devotion that continues to live in the hearts of Kapampangans under the loving mantle of their Indu.

On July 15, 1956, Pope Pius XII officially issued the Pontifical Decree (Papal Bull) authorizing one of the highest honors the Catholic Church can bestow upon a particular image of devotion: the Canonical Coronation of the Virgen de los Remedios.

It is a formal act that grants the pontifical authority to place an ornamental crown or diadem on a venerated image "in the name and by the authority of the Pope", and with this decree marks the Indu of Kapampangans as the 11th Pontifically Crowned Marian image in the Philippines. (out of 65, as of writing)

This papal recognition is fruit of the spiritual devotion of the Kapampangan faithful through the Crusade of Penance and Charity, further strengthening the Virgen de los Remediosโ€™ place as the Queen and Mother (Indu) of Pampanga, while also recognizing the growth and lasting impact of the Crusade of Penance and Charity, which brought a renewed and deepened Marian devotion throughout the province.

READ: INFORMATION ABOUT VDLR70

The 70th anniversary of the canonical coronation of the Virgen de los Remedios is an important milestone in the Marian devotion of Pampanga. But, with the present difficulties faced by many Kapampangans, the Archdiocese believes that the most meaningful expression of this devotion today is one that extends beyond the celebration itself. VDLR70 will be observed in a manner that is simpler, more modest, and mindful of the present situation of the province.

The Archdiocese, through cooperation of the St. John Mary Vianney Vicariate and the Cruzada de Penitencia y Caridad Permanent Committee, has decided that the resources and costs that would otherwise be spent on additional celebration-related operations should instead be redirected toward relief and humanitarian operations lead by our Social Action Center of Pampanga (SACOP).

As we gather on September 8 to honor our Indu, the Virgen de los Remedios, the Archdiocese invites everyone to also remember in prayer the families who have lost homes, livelihoods, and belongings because of the floodingโ€”and to make the anniversary not only a commemoration of 70 years of the canonical coronation, but also a concrete expression of faith, charity, and solidarity with those who are suffering.
