𝙇𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨:
𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 (𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙠𝙮𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨) 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙇𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙮

Prostration is the most humbling of prayer positions. To prostrate is to lie flat on one’s face (full prostration), or to bow low and touch one’s face to the ground (partial prostration). Our bodies speak outwardly to the act of surrender we are choosing with our will.

In the ancient Gallican rite of sixth- to eighth-century France and Germany, the gesture of full prostration was used before beginning every Mass. A trace of this practice is still found on Good Friday in which the Priests and Deacons prostrate before the altar at the beginning of the liturgy of the Lord's Passion.

1. Paschale Solemnitatis #68 states “The Priest and Minister make reverence to the altar prostrating themselves. This act of prostration, which is proper to the rite of the day, (Good Friday) should be strictly observed, for it signifies both the abasement of “earthly man” and also the grief and sorrow of the Church.”

2. The Roman Missal states for Friday of the Passion of the Lord [Good Friday] rubric #5: “The Priest and the Deacon, if a Deacon is present, wearing red vestments as for Mass, go to the altar in silence and, after making a reverence to the altar, prostrate themselves or, if appropriate, kneel and pray in silence for a while. All others kneel.”

3. Although the Roman Missal states that if a Priest or Deacon is unable to safely prostrate themselves, they are permitted to kneel, but prostration is preferred.

a. The gesture of prostration is the most expressive sign of a sense of deep humility and reverence.

Thus, Abraham and Moses prostrated themselves before God (Genesis 17:3; Exodus 34:8). The magi prostrated themselves and did the child Jesus homage (Matthew 2:11) The sick did Jesus homage when asking for healing (Matthew 8:2) as did those who wanted to show him their sentiments of adoration (Matthew 14:33; 28:9). The Book of Revelation also contrasts those who prostrate themselves before God (4:10) and those who do so before the idols or the beast (13:4).

St. Thomas Aquinas wrote “Adoration consists chiefly in an interior reverence of God, but secondarily in certain bodily signs of humility; thus when we genuflect we signify our weakness in comparison to God, and when we prostrate ourselves we profess that we are nothing of ourselves.” (Summa Theologiae, IIae-IIae q 84, 92, 2d.2) It is an acknowledgement of our total unworthiness.

b. It also denotes a penitential attitude, such as when Joseph’s brothers prostrated themselves as a sign of respect and in asking for forgiveness (Genesis 42:6; 43:26,28; 44:14). Joshua, together with the elders of Israel, rent their garments and lay prostrate before the ark of the Lord until evening, and they threw dust on their heads (Joshua 7:6). “While Ezra prayed and acknowledge their guilt weeping and prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites gathered about him” (Ezra 10:1) When the l***r came to Jesus for healing, he fell on his face and pleaded for mercy (Luke 5:12)

c. It is a posture of prayer. Indeed, the Sacred Scripture describes lying prostrate before the Lord as a position of deep, intense, emotional prayer. Moses lay prostrate before God for 40 days and nights (Deuteronomy 9:18:20, 25-27). Jesus lay prostrate in Gethsemane when he prayed that the cup might pass him (Matthew 26:39) (Mark 14:35)

d. It is a gesture of grief. This act, performed in complete silence, signifies the Church’s profound grief, sorrow and mourning over the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a physical representation of the Church joining in mourning the weight of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Prostration in the Scripture and in the liturgy is more than a mere physical act; it is a profound expression of the human heart’s attitude towards the Creator. It calls believers to approach God with reverence, humility, and a willingness to submit to his will, reflecting the ultimate example of Jesus Christ who humbled Himself in obedience to the Father unto the Cross.

4. The prostration should last long enough so that the echoes of banging kneelers have died out of our ears, and so we have time to pray.

Additional Intention for the Good Friday General Intercessions

Regarding the General intercessions, Orationes Solemnes, the Paschalis Solemnitatis #67 states “In case of grave public necessity the Local Ordinary may permit or prescribe the adding of special intentions (cf. Caeremoniale Episcoporum, #12). In this event the Priest is permitted to select from the prayers of the Missal those more appropriate to local circumstances, in such a way however, that the series follows the rule for General Intercession (cf Roman Missal, GIRM, #46). Moreover, the Pope himself, Pope Leo XIV pleads us to earnestly pray for peace in the world. “that the Prince of Peace may sustain the peoples wounded by war and open concrete paths to reconciliation and peace.”

On June 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV approved the text for the Mass for the Care of Creation (Missa Pro Custodia Creationis) to be included in the Roman Missal.

The Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Fernando has prepared the translation into Kapampangan along with other prayers for the care of creation.
