A SAFE SPACE

The political noise and chaos of today have intruded privacy where spiritual solitude isn’t to be disrupted, turned relationship conversation into tirade, thrash, threat, and theatrics, stablished polarization of diehard opinions, and isolated individuals from loving and understanding.

Certainly, it is uncomfortable or maybe underserving to be in a space that hurts, separates, intimidates, and manipulates. However, we must crave for a safe space where quiet grace is extended, where listening ear is extended, where shared smile is felt, where compassion is received, and where healing is celebrated.

In all of these, I turn to the Lord.

“1He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2

When the chaos of our time-the unsafe space is distressing or seem uncontrolled, there is a safe space-a safe and secure relationship with God. God is always our safe space. Relationship with Him provides us a space to inhale fresh peace, joy, comfort, wisdom, and strength amidst the noise of this world. Behind the furious headlines and the defensive walls, we quietly run to the Lord for safety and rest. The chaos of politics can lock us in a room of panic, anxiety and division, we don’t need to live with them but freely turn to the Lord Who alone is our safe space.

It’s God, Not Us

3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Exodus 7:3-4a

Pharaoh’s stubborn resistance was part of God’s sovereign plan. God used Pharaoh’s rebellion to prove that God alone had the power to rescue His people.

Moses misunderstood his calling as a prophet which resulted in wrong expectations. Moses was a pragmatist. He had a performance based approach to prophetic ministry. He assumed that it was up to the prophet to get results. If people listened to him, then he was doing his job; if not, he should find some other line of work. This explains why Moses was always worrying about whether people would listen to him. Moses said, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice . . .” (Exodus 4:1). Or, “How then shall Pharaoh listen to me” (Exodus 6:12, 30).

The truth is that spiritual results in prophetic ministry are always beyond human control. No matter how eloquent one is, and no matter how persuasive, there is nothing a prophet or a preacher can do to make people believe God’s Word. It takes faith for someone to believe, and faith is a gift of God’s grace. The only thing that matters to God is whether or not the prophet or the preach is faithful. The preacher is not responsible for the way the people respond to his message, but only for getting the message delivered in the right way.

The primary thing that God demands from a pastor is faithfulness to His Gospel. God does not rank preachers by the number of their converts or size of their churches. Rather, God judges them according to the accuracy of their Biblical exposition.

Be faithful in the preparation, delivery, and practice of God’s Word.

It’s an Order, Not Volunteer

28 On the day when the LORD spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 the LORD said to Moses, “I am the LORD; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” 30 But Moses said to the LORD, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips. How will Pharaoh listen to me?” Exodus 6:28-30

We often come up with excuses for not doing what God tells us to do. Like Moses, we tend to use the same objections over and over. It takes us years to get past our tired old excuses for not giving, not going, not witnessing, or not serving. We need to discover what Moses discovered: God’s call is always accompanied by God’s gift.

The most compelling assurance for Moses is that God made his lips, and He had already promised to teach him whatever he needed to say and how to say it (Exodus 4:11,12). For another thing, God had guaranteed Moses that He would get help from his brother Aaron, who was good at speaking (Exodus 4:14-16).

God was not asking Moses if he wanted to volunteer. God was ordering him to go. God said, “I am the LORD; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” God’s imperative was based on the absolute lordship of God’s sovereignty. God has the authority, the right to tell Moses what to do because He is Lord of Heaven and earth. His commands are not invitations to dialogue but orders to obey. Once God told him what to do, Moses simply needed to do as he was told, without arguing about whether it could be done.

‘I Put My Trust in You’

3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? Psalm 56:3-4

Faith overcomes fear. Trusting God took David’s fear away. He begins to say, “When I am afraid,” and later says, “I shall not be afraid.” Faith is the bridge from crisis to calm.

Fear can paralyze, immobilize, and stop us in our tracks. Fear can make us panic and set up for bad decisions.

As a Christian, we need to respond to fear with faith. “When I am afraid”-at that moment of fear- “I put my trust in you.” It is being human to respond in fear. However, when our lives are in danger and beyond our control, we can choose to trust God. At times, we feel a deep sense of need, of exposedness to danger, of weakness, of sorrow, and only then will there come the calmness of confidence.

David’s faith is anchored in God. It is specific: “I will put my trust in you.” He trusts God because He knows God.

He knows God because God revealed Himself to David in His Word. “In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust. David knew that God would keep His Word, and he trusted God’s promises.

God’s promises are never more precious to us when we need to hold on to them in the darkest moments. Then we love His Words, the Bible becomes our treasure, and we trust Him. Trust in God tramples fear.
