TODAY'S SCIENCE TRIVIA: In 1961, National Scientist Dr. Ricardo M. Lantican co-authored a study that looked into how a disease called Southern corn leaf blight affected a number of crops in the corn fields of UP Los Baños. Dr. Lantican’s team discovered that the affected plants had something in common: the T-cytoplasm trait. However, when Dr. Lantican and his co-authors revealed their findings, few recognized the value of their research.

This changed a decade later, when a fungus called 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘥𝘪𝘴 infected U.S. corn with the aforementioned disease, decimating the country’s corn yield in 1970. It was at that moment when the U.S.–and the world–realized that Dr. Lantican and his colleagues were already on to the problem way before it became a mini-disaster. Had sufficient attention been paid to the team’s findings earlier, the U.S. corn industry would have been spared from billions of dollars’ worth of losses.

In other words, farmers' livelihoods were saved and the world dodged a corn crisis, simply because Dr. Lantican and his colleagues were crazy about research.

Today is the 106th birth anniversary of Manuel Conde, National Artist for Cinema

In the decades before and after World War II when Philippine society was being inundated by American popular culture, Conde invested local cinema with a distinct cultural history of its own through movies that translated onto the silver screen the age-old stories that Filipinos had told and retold from generation to generation for at least the past one hundred years.

Among the narratives that Conde directed and/or produced for the screen were three of the most famous metrical romances in Philippine lowland culture: Siete Infantes de Lara, Ibong Adarna, and Prinsipe Tenoso.
