First Day of Misa de Aguinaldo Trivia

Simbang Gabi, also known as Simbang Bengi or Misa de Gallo, traces its origins to 1587 in Mexico, when Fr. Diego de Soria sought permission to celebrate a nine-day novena of Masses before Christmas to prepare the faithful for the birth of Christ. These outdoor evening Masses, called Misas de Aguinaldo or “Gift Masses,” were meant as an offering to the Christ Child. Through the Galleon Trade between Mexico and the Philippines, Spanish friars later introduced this tradition to the Philippines, initially observing it in the evening as practiced in Mexico.

Over time, the practice adapted to Filipino life. Since December is harvest season, evening Masses proved difficult for farmers, leading to the shift to early morning celebrations. With this change came new customs such as food stalls selling native delicacies and brass bands waking parishioners at dawn, and the Masses became known as Misa de Gallo, symbolizing the rooster’s crow at daybreak. Despite changes in place, time, and name, the heart of Simbang Gabi has remained the same: a sacred novena offered by the faithful as a gift in joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Through Simbang Bengi and Misa de Gallo, we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. On Christmas Day, we rejoice in His birth, and as the year draws to a close, we entrust our prayers and thanksgiving to God on New Year’s Eve, welcoming 2026 with renewed faith.

We thank our Lord for the gift of four young men to be ordained on December 03, 2025.

Seminarians Harold De Guzman, Allan Paul Mariano, John Paul Toting, and Kavin Simbulan will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary.

The Eucharistic Celebration and the Rite of Ordination will be presided by the Most Rev. Florentino G. Lavarias, D.D.

Those who cannot physically attend can join the celebration through our broadcast.
