Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Luke 6:38
What if the Lord kept a tally of every blessing He bestowed on us, of every time He extended us forgiveness and mercy? None of us would ever be able to repay the debt we’d accumulate, not even if He were to keep score for just a single day. Most of us would be in over our heads before a mere hour had passed. Many of our transgressions are committed without us even being aware of it.
Sin entered humanity with the fall, becoming second nature, infecting us like an undetectable poison entering our bloodstream. It’s our most stubborn hereditary trait, and none are immune to it.
None but Jesus. Fully God, as well as fully human, He submitted Himself to being exactly like us in every aspect but one. No matter how He must have been tempted by everything He witnessed during His time on earth, Jesus never sinned. He remained blameless and holy, the perfect only Firstborn of God Himself. He never faltered, because His Father’s plan was at stake.
Blood must be spilled as payment for humankind’s wrongs. But none of us are capable of settling the debt.
It’s a good thing then that God has decided to collect what we owe from Jesus. His mercy outweighs even His need for righteousness. The Almighty gives us what we don’t deserve. He pays the price for transgressions He hasn’t committed. With His own life Jesus buys our freedom and ensures that we forever belong to Him. God provides each of us with brand-new identities as children of the heavenly kingdom.
As believers and heirs of the Lord, we have come into possession of riches beyond measure. Not only will we inherit heavenly treasures, we have also been blessed with the Holy Spirit. He changes our souls, so we’ll become more like our Father. Just as generous and willing to give without measuring and keeping track, because everything was given to us for free in the first place. We can share without fear of lacking anything, because our Father provides for us. And sharing our blessings means God’s love is shining through us.
