HOW TO SPOT A SELF-EXALTING PERSON
Lessons from Diotrephes — 3 John 9–11
The apostle John gives us a sobering picture of Diotrephes, a man who wanted prominence rather than humble service. His example warns us about what happens when pride takes the place of Christlike humility.
1. LOVES TO BE FIRST — 3 John 9
A self-exalting person craves position, recognition, and control. He wants to be noticed, honored, and regarded as the most important person in the group.
2. REJECTS GODLY LEADERSHIP — 3 John 9
Pride makes a person resistant to correction and legitimate spiritual authority. Instead of humbly submitting to biblical truth, he insists on having his own way.
3. SPEAKS EVIL AGAINST OTHERS — 3 John 9–10
A proud heart often reveals itself through the tongue. Such a person may use gossip, slander, accusations, and divisive words to tear others down and protect his own influence.
4. REJECTS AND EXPELS GOD’S PEOPLE — 3 John 10
Instead of welcoming and loving fellow believers, he pushes them away, especially those who challenge his authority or refuse to follow his agenda. Pride produces division where Christ calls for love and fellowship.
5. STOPS THE WORK OF GOD — 3 John 10
Self-exaltation can become so destructive that a person begins to hinder ministry, discourage faithful workers, and oppose those who are advancing the truth. The work of Christ becomes secondary to protecting one's own position.
6. IS PROUD AND UNREPENTANT — 3 John 11
The deepest problem is a heart that refuses correction. Even when confronted with wrongdoing, the self-exalting person refuses to humble himself and turn from his ways.
THE WARNING
Diotrephes reminds us that being in a position of leadership does not automatically mean having the character of a godly leader.
Jesus taught the opposite spirit:
“Whoever wants to become first among you shall be your servant.” — Matthew 20:27
A self-exalting person asks, “How can I be first?” A Christlike servant asks, “How can I glorify Christ and serve His people?”
May we examine our own hearts, reject pride, welcome correction, love God's people, and follow the humility of Christ.
