The image of Our Lady of La Vang is based on alleged apparitions of Mary to Christians in Vietnam during the persecution in Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin-China. The Christians escaped to the forest. While there, many of them got sick. Mary appeared to them and comforted them. She also instructed them to boil the leaves of a particular tree which they could use as medicine. The word “la” means leaf and “vang” means herbal seeds.
