Philippine church history narrates that the Spaniards entered Capiz in 1569 with no less than Legaspi himself establishing in the area the second settlement (after Cebu) in the entire country. A few decades later, due to the maturity of the faith of the people of Capiz, Most Rev. Cuenco, D.D., then Archbishop of Jaro, deemed it wise to recommend to Rome the canonical er****on of Capiz into a Dioce
se to comprise the newly chartered City of Roxas (formerly Capiz, Capiz) and the civil provinces of Capiz, Aklan and Romblon. Created Diocese on January 27, 1951 erected on July 11, 1951 the Pontifical Bull Ex Supremi Apostolatus issued by Pope Pius XII on July 11, 1951 effected the separation. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mother became the Titular of the newly erected Diocese of Capiz. On January 17, 1976, Pope Paul VI elevated the Diocese of Capiz into a Metropolitan See to comprise along with its suffragans, the Diocese of Kalibo and Romblon, the Ecclesiastical Province of Capiz. To date Capiz has the following succession of Bishops: Manuel Yap of Mandaue, Cebu (1951- 1952), Antonio Floro Frondosa of Dumalag, Capiz (1952- 1986), Onesimo Cadiz Gordoncillo of Jimalalud, Negros Oriental (1986-2011) and Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula of Dumalag Capiz (2011- 2021). Advincula to the College of Cardinals during a consistory on November 28, 2020 and gave Him the title Cardinal priest of San Vigilio in Rome. His Holiness Pope Francis appoints His Eminence Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula as 33rd Archbishop of Manila on March 25, 2021, Feast of the Annunciation.
