Silence is golden
β Hey, you idiot! Did you hear that soldiers passed through here? β asked a man to the blind farmer.
A minute later, another man approached him and said:
β Blind man! Did soldiers march through here?
A little later, a third voice was heard:
β Sir, did you hear if soldiers passed through this road?
Finally, another person approached and, putting his hand on the farmer's shoulder, asked:
β Dear sir, please tell me, did you hear people passing through this road?
And the blind man correctly described those who asked him questions: the first was a soldier, the second was a captain, the third was a general, and the fourth was a king.
Words reveal the education of the speaker. Language is the weapon of the heart; it protects a person's life. Long conversations, loud speech, rough and unrestrained words, full of anger and hatred, all of these affect a person's health and create anger and hatred in others; such speech wounds, alienates, and hardens.
Why is it said that silence is gold? A silent person has no enemies, but on the other hand he may not have friends. He has leisure, the opportunity to delve into himself and identify their shortcomings and mistakes. He does not have a tendency to look for them in others. If you stumble, you may get away with a sprained ankle, but if your tongue stumbles, you may strike at another person's faith and happiness. From this blow, they may never recover, the wound will always hurt.
Therefore, use language with great caution. The softer you speak, the less you speak, the gentler you speak, the better it is for you and for others.
NIV, Proverbs 10:19
Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.
