ENDURE

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:3

A good soldier. A man who fully understands his mandate and mission. A man of courage, who doesn't back away when the battle heats up. Someone who runs toward danger in the service of others, sacrificing his own safety for the well-being of his friends.

That is exactly how the apostle Paul advised his son in the faith and ministry - Timothy. In the last stretch of his life, Paul pours his heart out to the great Pastor of the Church of Ephesus.

We must ENDURE HARDSHIP. Hardship pertaining to a good soldier. We are Christians and Church leaders, called by God to lead by being good examples to the flock of God. We must be soldiers who follow our Leader and Commander who sacrificed himself by enduring the cross, despising the shame in order to rescue us from the wrath of God.

Because of much opposition, Timothy could be tempted to retreat regarding the testimony and ministry of Christ. Many others did and abandoned him. And so Paul exhorted him, Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner... (1:8) Timothy was perhaps tempted to be ashamed regarding the testimony of Christ (a Savior who died on a cross). Timothy was tempted to be ashamed of his connection with Paul (many others did and abandoned him). And so Paul exhorted him, [Timothy] Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner... (1:8) Timothy, perhaps tempted to shrink back due to his own weakness and cower from what God had called him to do, was encouraged by Paul in the first verse of our text โ€œThou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus Jesus" (2:1).

This is key to enduring as a soldier of Christ. Be strengthened by grace. God's grace is not just pardon for sin. It is power for living. God's grace is his constant, never-ending, gracious disposition toward. And this grace is in Christ. In Christ, God is 100% for you - now and forever, There is nothing that will change that. Not because he thinks you are so amazing, but because you are in Christ. And this is meant to strengthen us.

And strengthened by this grace Paul calls Timothy to be a good soldier. Verse 3 of our text "Share in suffering as a good soldier..." A good soldier. Not merely a soldier. Someone who is in the military could be dishonorably discharged and if so he would not be a soldier at all. But one could remain in the military and still not be a "good soldier" or "honorableโ€.

So Paul commands Timothy (as well as you and l) to be good soldiers of Jesus Christ.

There is only ONE WAY TO BECOME ONE - ENDURE HARDSHIP.

As we come to the close of another School Year at BBI, we know our calling and ministry can be realized on that same pattern. Endure hardship, and be a good soldier of the Cross!

There may be other circumstances in our lives that make a Christian education difficult. And since education is our lasting legacy to them, such an investment proves to be worth it.
