I've taught Sunday School for 25 years. Last month, I ran into one of my former students—she's 24 now and an atheist. She said, "You taught me all the stories, but you never taught me why any of it was true."
Her name is Ashley.
I taught her from age 6 to 12.
She was one of my best students.
Knew all the memory verses. Won every Bible trivia game. Got baptized at 10.
I ran into her at the grocery store last month.
"Mrs. Patterson! It's Ashley—from Sunday School!"
I hugged her. Asked about her life.
That's when she told me.
"I'm not really religious anymore. I stopped believing in college."
My heart sank.
"What happened?"
She paused.
"Honestly? I got to college and realized I didn't know WHY any of it was true. I knew all the stories. David and Goliath. Noah's Ark. The resurrection. But when someone asked me for evidence, I had nothing."
"What do you mean?"
"My roommate was an atheist. She asked me why I believed the Bible was true. I said 'because it's God's Word.' She said 'that's circular reasoning.' And I realized... she was right. I'd never learned actual reasons. Just stories."
She wasn't angry. Just honest.
"I loved your class, Mrs. Patterson. But you taught me WHAT to believe. No one ever taught me WHY."
I drove home in silence.
25 years of teaching Sunday School.
Hundreds of kids.
How many of them were like Ashley?
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I kept thinking about every child I'd taught.
All the felt-board Bible stories. The memory verse competitions. The songs and crafts.
Had I been sending kids into the world with nothing but stories?
The next Sunday, I tested my current class.
Eight kids. Ages 10-12.
"Why do you believe the Bible is true?"
"Because it's God's Word."
"But how do you know it's God's Word?"
Blank stares.
"Because... the Bible says so?"
Circular reasoning.
Every single kid.
I asked another question.
"Why did Jesus have to die? Why couldn't God just forgive us?"
"Because He loves us?"
"But WHY did He have to die? What was happening on the cross?"
Silence.
They knew the story. They didn't understand the theology.
Just like Ashley.
That week, I did something I'd never done before.
I looked up my former students on Facebook.
Kids I'd taught 10, 15, 20 years ago.
The pattern was devastating.
Post after post about "deconstructing."
About "leaving toxic religion."
About "finally thinking for myself."
One former student had written: "I spent 12 years in church and no one ever gave me a single reason to believe. Just feelings and stories. That's not enough."

I'd read that statistic before.
Now I was seeing the faces.
My kids. My students. Walking away.
Because I gave them crafts when they needed foundations.
That Sunday, I talked to Pastor Williams after service.
"Pastor, I need help. I think I've been failing these kids for 25 years."
I told him about Ashley. About testing my current class. About the Facebook posts.
He listened carefully.
"Martha, you're not alone. This is happening everywhere. Sunday School curriculums are designed to teach stories, not theology. Nobody trained us to do anything different."
"So what do I do? I can't keep sending kids out unprepared."
He walked to his bookshelf and pulled out a workbook.
"A children's pastor in Texas told me about this six months ago. Systematic theology for kids. 52 weeks. It teaches them WHY Christianity is true, not just WHAT the stories say."
"Theology for kids?"
"Real theology. Evidence for God's existence. Why the Bible is reliable. How to defend the resurrection. All at a level kids can understand."
"And it works?"
"His Sunday School kids can now explain things most adults can't. He said a 12-year-old defended the faith to her atheist teacher. We need to rebuild our children's curriculum around this."
He handed me the workbook.
"Start using it. If it works, we'll roll it out to the whole children's ministry."
I took it home that night.
Lesson 1: How Do We Know God Exists?
Not "the Bible tells us so."
The cosmological argument explained for kids.
The moral argument with examples from their lives.
Logic exercises that made them think through the evidence.
I'd been teaching Sunday School for 25 years.
This was what I should have been teaching all along.
That Sunday, I tried it with my class.
"We're going to learn something different today. We're going to learn WHY we believe what we believe."
I saw curiosity on their faces.
We opened to Lesson 1.
"Everything that begins to exist has a cause. Did the universe begin?"
"Yes," one boy said. "The Big Bang."
"So if the universe began, what caused it?"
A girl named Emma raised her hand. "Something that didn't begin? Something that was always there?"
"Like what?"
"God?"
"You just made an argument for God's existence. Without using the Bible."
Her eyes went wide. "We can prove God exists without the Bible?"
For the first time in 25 years, I watched kids lean in—not because of a game or a prize, but because it made sense.
Week 4: Why Trust the Bible?
I'd always taught: "The Bible is true because it's God's Word."
The workbook taught: 5,800 Greek manuscripts. Dating within decades of the original events. More evidence than any ancient document.
A boy named James looked up. "So we have more proof for the Bible than for stuff everyone just believes? Like Julius Caesar?"
"Way more."
"Why didn't anyone tell us this?"
"Because I didn't know it either. Until now."
Week 7: Evidence for the Resurrection.
We covered the minimal facts approach.
Five facts that even non-Christian scholars accept.
The kids went through every alternative explanation.
"Hallucination doesn't work because groups don't hallucinate the same thing."
"Conspiracy doesn't work because people don't die for what they know is a lie."
"Legend doesn't work because the sources are too early."
These were 11 and 12-year-olds.
Thinking. Reasoning. Defending.
Week 10, I got a phone call.
James's mother.
"Mrs. Patterson, what are you teaching in Sunday School?"
My stomach dropped. Was she upset?
"James spent 30 minutes at dinner explaining why the resurrection is historically credible. He used words like 'minimal facts' and 'manuscript evidence.' He's 11."
"Is that... okay?"
"Okay? It's incredible. My husband started asking questions. James had answers. Where did this come from?"
"We're doing systematic theology now. Teaching them to think, not just memorize."
"Don't ever stop."
Week 14, something unexpected happened.
My phone buzzed. A Facebook message.
From Ashley.
"Mrs. Patterson, my mom told me you're teaching Sunday School differently now. Something about evidence and arguments? What changed?"
I told her about the workbook. About what I'd learned. About what I wished I'd taught her.
"Could you send me what you're using? I've been an atheist for 6 years. But I've never actually heard the evidence. Just the stories."
I sent her the link that night.
Week 18, Ashley messaged again.
"I've been going through this. The resurrection stuff is hard to dismiss. I'm not saying I believe yet. But I'm not sure I disbelieve anymore either."
I started crying.
Week 20, Pastor Williams called a meeting.
"Martha's results are in. I want to hear what's happening in her class."
I showed them the transformation.
Kids who could explain the cosmological argument.
Kids who understood manuscript evidence.
Kids who could defend the resurrection with historical facts.
"This is what we're supposed to be doing," Pastor Williams said. "I'm making this workbook the foundation of our entire children's ministry."
Starting next month, every Sunday School class in our church will use it.
Last Sunday, a new family visited.
The mother asked me, "What makes your Sunday School different?"
I said something I never could have said a year ago.
"We don't just teach your kids Bible stories. We teach them why those stories are true. By the time they leave our class, they'll be able to defend their faith to anyone."
She enrolled her kids that day.
I'm 58 years old.
I've taught Sunday School for 25 years.
And I spent most of those years doing it wrong.
I can't go back and give Ashley what she needed.
But I can make sure the kids in my class today don't become the next Ashley.
