Just sharing: THE ROLE OF THE CHOIR
Many people think the choir is in the church to:
• entertain
• sing beautifully
• or “perform” during Mass
But the truth is deeper.
The choir is not there to perform…
they are there to serve the liturgy.
WHAT IS THE CHOIR IN THE CHURCH?
The choir is a liturgical ministry.
This means their role is not optional decoration, it is part of how the Church worships God.
Their duty is to:
👉 Lead the faithful in prayer through music
👉 Support the sacred actions of the Mass
👉 Help the congregation participate actively
THE PURPOSE OF MUSIC IN THE MASS
Music in the Mass is not for vibes or atmosphere.
It is prayer.
As taught in the Church (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium):
“He who sings prays twice.”
This is often attributed to Saint Augustine.
So when the choir sings:
• they are not performing
• they are praying on behalf of the people and with the people
THE TRUE ROLE OF THE CHOIR:
1. To Lead, Not Replace the Congregation:
The choir should:
• guide the people
• not døminate them
If only the choir is singing, something is missing.
The Mass is not a concert, it is communal worship.
2. To Support the Liturgy (Not Distract From It):
Every part of the Mass has its own moment:
• Entrance chant
• Gloria
• Responsorial Psalm
• Alleluia
• Holy, Holy (Sanctus)
• Lamb of God (Agnus Dei)
The choir’s job is to fit into these moments, not overshadow them.
3. To Preserve the Sâcred Atmosphere:
Music should:
• be prayerful
• be appropriate to the liturgy
• reflect reverence
Not every song belongs in the Mass.
4. To Help the Faithful Pray:
A good choir does something powerful:
They make it easier for people to encounter God.
Even someone who cannot pray well can be lifted through music.
⚠️ COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS
❌ “The choir is performing”
No.
They are ministers, just like lectors and altar servers.
❌ “The better the voice, the better the choir”
Not necessarily.
A choir can sing beautifully and still miss the spïrit of worship.
❌ “The choir controls the Mass”
No.
👉 The liturgy leads.
👉 The choir follows.
A DEEPER TRUTH:
The choir stands in a unique place:
They are both:
• part of the congregation
• and leaders of prayer
This is a sacred responsibility.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHOIR?
A good choir is not known by:
• how loud they sing
• how complex their harmonies are
But by this:
👉 Do they help people pray?
FINAL THOUGHT
When the choir understands its role:
The Mass becomes more than words…
It becomes an experience of heaven.
Because in heaven:
Worship is not spoken alone, it is sung.
CONCLUSION
The choir is not there to shine…
they are there to point to God.
And when they do that well:
Nobody leaves saying,
“Wow, what a performance.”
Instead, they leave saying:
“I encountered God.”
Now you know.
Be Prayerful. Be Inspired
