St. Augustine of Hippo, once leading a life of sin, underwent a profound conversion to become a beacon of Christianity. Born to St. Monica in Africa, Augustine's early years were marked by immoral living and a pursuit of false beliefs, despite his Christian upbringing and remarkable intellect. His journey to faith was inspired by his mother's persistent prayers and the compelling preaching of St. Ambrose.
For a time, Augustine hesitated to embrace Christianity, doubting his capacity for a pure life. However, the sudden conversion of two men upon reading St. Antony's life stirred him. In a moment of deep anguish, he sought solace in a garden, where a child's song, "Take up and read," prompted him to read St. Paul's letters. The scripture he encountered spoke directly to his struggles, urging a life free from impurity and in Christ's footsteps.
This experience transformed Augustine. He was baptized, ordained as a priest and bishop, and became a renowned Catholic writer and the founder of a religious order. His life of devotion and charity was encapsulated by a phrase displayed prominently in his room: "Here we do not speak evil of anyone." He combated heresies, embraced poverty, aided the needy, and dedicated himself to frequent preaching and fervent prayer.
Reflecting on his past, Augustine famously lamented, "Too late have I loved You!" Yet, his saintly life powerfully atoned for his former transgressions. St. Augustine's feast day is celebrated on August 28th.
