Mary mistook Jesus for the gardener. Why didnโ€™t she recognize her Master and Teacher, whom she had followed for years and loved dearly? Were her eyes blinded by tears? Had she, like the other disciples, forgotten His promise to rise from the grave three days after his death? Or could she simply not fathom it, even after witnessing Lazarusโ€™s resurrection?

Whatever the reason, she didnโ€™t recognize him, even as He asked why she wept and whom she sought. But when He called her nameโ€”โ€œMary!โ€โ€”light broke through.

Just one word, her name. Earlier, he had addressed her as โ€œwoman.โ€ Now, He called her by her name. He knew her personally.

Her response shifted too: from formal โ€œSirโ€ to intimate โ€œRabboni,โ€ a term of deep devotion.

I wonder how Jesus said it. Sternly, as a gentle reprimand for not recognizing Him? Chidingly, like a prompt? Perhaps, He said it reassuringly since she was sobbing in distress.

Scripture doesnโ€™t specify. But it does tell us that hearing Him say her name prompted her to recognize Him as her dearly loved Teacher and Lord.

When Jesus called Mary by name, I believe He spoke it lovingly to emphasize that ๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€ knowing her mattered more than her knowing him.

Grief, weariness, and difficulties can blind us to Jesusโ€™ presence, especially when weโ€™re hurting most. Yet He calls to us until we become aware of His presence.

Once Mary recognized Him, He sends her to proclaim His resurrection, the miracle she witnessed firsthand, to the other disciples.

(๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ 20:16-17)

All four Gospels confirm Mary Magdalene as the first witness of Jesus' resurrection and that He had entrusted her with this world-changing news.

The *Tyndale Devotional Bible* notes: โ€œIn a legal setting, the testimony of a woman was considered unreliable, subject to undue influences of the heart and imagination and therefore inadmissible. Men of the first centuryโ€”Jewish, Greek, Roman, Arabโ€”all held this view... They easily dismissed the words of a woman if those words didnโ€™t fit their assumptions. The disciples rejected Mary Magdaleneโ€™s testimony of having seen Jesus (Mark 16:11), and they were later rebuked for that by Jesus himself (Mark 16:14). Some biblical scholars consider this one of the clearest signs of the Gospelโ€™s authenticity. No man of the first century would fabricate a story about a miracle and then undermine it by having women as the first witnesses to it. It had to be true.โ€

What does it say about Jesus choosing a grief-stricken woman as the first herald of His resurrectionโ€”the pivotal victory over sin and death?

Easter greetings remind us today: amid lingering sin and death, we live with resurrection hope.

If grief clouds that promise for you, hear Jesus calling your name through the confusion. As you recognize Him in your brokenness, heed His commission: *Go and tell.*

Those best able to share the Good News of Jesus' Resurrection are those who know the brokenness of life without Him and now live in confident peace of being known by Him. They cannot help but say, โ€œI have seen the Lord!โ€

On Good Friday, we often contemplate images of the crucified Christโ€”His beaten, bloodied body a stark reminder of the immense cost of His sacrifice to redeem humanity from sin (John 3:16).

This painting invites us to linger on that pivotal day, viewing it through Jesus' own eyes as He endured the shame and agony of the cross.

What captures your gaze first? Where do your eyes naturally drift, and why? What emotions stir as you pause there?

Resist the urge to look away. Let the painting draw you deeper. Allow it to evoke the feelings it stirs.

Do you notice John, the beloved disciple? Mary, Jesus' mother? The faithful women who supported His itinerant ministry (Luke 8:1-3)? The Roman centurions (Luke 23:36)? The Jewish scribes and leaders (Matthew 27:41)? The two white-robed men seated outside the tomb where Jesus would soon be laid? The distant bystanders (Luke 23:35, 49)? What expressions mark their faces? Is it grief, curiosity, remorse, smugness, love, devotion, hatred, or indifference?

And who is that figure, prostrate at Jesus' feet? Study her face and outstretched hands. She is Mary Magdalene. She is not a prostituted woman as mistakenly depicted in movies but a woman Jesus freed from seven demons (Luke 8:2), a number symbolizing torment that permeated her entire life: mind, body, and relationships. Healed completely, she joined His wandering ministry, providing essential resources alongside other women disciples (Luke 8:1-3). She is one of the few followers who is an eyewitness to four pivotal moments of Jesus' passion: His crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. The artist places her nearest the cross, her face etched with grief and love, to honor her as an epitome of complete surrender and devoted discipleship.

Jesus gazed upon them allโ€”followers, foes, and bystandersโ€”and loved them enough to die for every one so that those who believe in Him might have life.

With Kawayan Camp just three months away, there is always that sense of nostalgia and excitement as we revisit our KC or other camp experiences. Many of us received our calling or encountered a turning point during those camps. For our featured student in this monthโ€™s IV Connections, he experienced both.

Enjoy this retelling of Gabโ€™s story. If you see your own story between the lines, may it lead you to celebrate Godโ€™s continuing work in the camps and campuses where we do our faithful work for Him.โœจ

Junior Staff Training was more than a series of sessionsโ€”it was a journey of the heart. From the start, it gave all of us a space to pause, reflect, and evaluate our calling. Through shared stories, discussions, and personal reflections, a common realization emerged, summed up by all the staff: Ministry is not about performance or recognition, but about daily faithfulness, surrender, and trusting God in every taskโ€”whether seen or unseen.

One of the distinct takeaways came from the session, "Administry"โ€”administration is a ministry too. The reports, planning, and quiet behind-the-scenes work all carry weight when done to serve others and glorify God. Staff reflections highlighted how even the unseen tasks matter, and that every roleโ€”office or fieldโ€”is part of Godโ€™s work. We also explored how to connect with Gen Z, learning that staying rooted in God helps us be attentive and compassionate to those we are called to reach.

Beyond the lessons, JST became a space for honest sharing and encouragement. Staff reflected on their joys, struggles, and growth, realizing that no one ministers alone. Celebrating the transition of junior staff into intermediate staff was a highlight, showing Godโ€™s faithfulness in their journey and inspiring everyone to continue faithfully in their own roles.

As the training ended, the collective reflection was clear: wherever God places usโ€”frontlines or behind the scenesโ€”our purpose remains the same. We ended the JST renewed, grounded in Him, trusting His faithfulness, and committed to walking with others toward Christ with joy and faithfulness.

Day 3 of JST was a quiet but deep day for all of us.

We started with our personal time with God, then shared what He has been teaching us in different seasons of our lives. Whether in seasons of joy, waiting, or struggle, hearing each other reminded us that God is present in all of it.

We then entered into a Lectio Divina on Matthew 5:22โ€“30 and the Parable of the Talents. As Ate Di helped us reflect, one truth stayed in our hearts: God gave everything for us, so our only response is to give our whole lives back to Him. Not half, and not only when itโ€™s easyโ€”but all of it, even in the hidden and difficult parts.

The book report sharing followed, where three junior staff shared what they have learned regarding leadership, lifeโ€™s critical journey, and the renovation of the heart. It wasnโ€™t just reporting; it was personal. We saw how God is shaping each one from the inside out, not just for the sake of ministry.

In the afternoon, we had a workshop on how to make reports that are clear, honest, and meaningful. We were reminded that communication mattersโ€”what we share can help others see what God is doing. We were also called back to our role as stewards of creation; caring for what God has made is part of our obedience, not just an extra responsibility.

We ended the day with family time. It became a safe space to lay down our burdensโ€”struggles in ministry, personal pains, and silent battles. We listened to one another, prayed, and simply stayed present. In that space, we were reminded that we carry these things together, and that God meets us even there.

Personally, I was encouraged by how God is moving in each of us differently but faithfully. Hearing the stories, lessons, and struggles of others made me feel that I am not alone in this journey. It deepened my desire to walk closely with God and give my all, knowing that He has already given everything for me.

Though the road to our Junior Staff Training was long, yet we praise God for the hand of protection that brought us safely to our destination. We began our first day by intentionally quieting our hearts, centering our attention on Christ. Though the world around us is often loud and demanding, yet we found a sacred space to be fully aware of Godโ€™s presence, beginning our journey with a Spirit-led rest.

Our retreat was set against a scenic lake with the breathtaking view of Mt. Mayon. Though we have spent much of our ministry seasons apart, yet the simple joy of seeing each other face-to-face warmed our hearts deeply. That evening, we shared our praises and prayers; though our burdens and concerns were many, yet we found peace in laying them all at the feet of the Father.

The following morning, we embraced the discipline of "disconnecting to connect." Though it is tempting to stay tethered to our daily tasks, yet we followed the Lordโ€™s example by spending our early hours in solitude with the Father. This quietness prepared us for our book report session, where three of our Junior Staff shared insights from their readings. Though we each study individually, yet it was an amazing experience to hear their reflections and grow through our shared thoughts.

Our study then brought us to the heart of our theme in Habakkuk 3:16-19. We sat with the prophetโ€™s reality: though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, yet he rejoices in the Lord. We identified the "thoughs" in our own ministryโ€”the moments where the fields of our work feel bareโ€”and resolved to find our strength in the Sovereign Lord.

This perspective guided our afternoon session on Global and Youth Trends. Though the world of the youth is rapidly changing and complex, yet we are challenged to meet students exactly where they are with the unchanging Gospel. We ended our day as a family, listening to the stories of our transitioning and graduating Junior Staff. Though saying goodbye marks the end of one journey, yet the wisdom shared by our National Director Di Fernandez reminds us that every ending is a new beginning in God's faithfulness.

Pray for and with us:

๐ŸงDid you know this year *Lent* (the 40 days many Christians practice as spiritual preparation remembering Jesus 40 days in the wilderness ending in Easter/Resurrection Sunday) and *Ramadan* (the 29 or 30 days of spiritual practices for Muslims remembering when the Quran was given to Muhammad ending in Eid al-Fitr) overlap almost completely this year?

Both often include fasting, prayer, charity, and communal faith practices. We could have a lot to talk about!

๐Ÿค”Do you know how to share about Easter with friends from other faith backgrounds?

๐Ÿ˜ณDo you know how to start a conversation with a Muslim friend (Filipino or international) about Ramadan?

๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒLetโ€™s meet and talk about it! Letโ€™s practice! Letโ€™s prepare ourselves to be better friends and have more confidence in sharing about the holiday that brings new life. ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ

Canโ€™t wait to see you Friday, March 20th, 7pm. Bring a friend!

See the Google Meet link in the comments!
