Today, the Church lovingly remembers St. Philip Neri, often called the โ€œApostle of Romeโ€ and widely known as the Patron Saint of Joy. His life is a beautiful reminder that holiness is not only found in solemnity, but also in a heart filled with genuine joy rooted in God.

St. Philip Neri lived a life of deep prayer, humility, and simplicity. Yet what made him especially remarkable was the joyful spirit that radiated through everything he did. He believed that sadness and discouragement have no place in a soul that truly trusts in God. His famous approach to holiness was gentle, approachable, and filled with humor โ€” drawing many souls closer to Christ not through fear, but through love and joy.

Despite his deep spiritual life, St. Philip often expressed joy in simple and even playful ways, reminding others that faith should never become heavy or lifeless. He once said, โ€œA joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one,โ€ teaching us that joy is not just a feeling, but a fruit of a soul rooted in Godโ€™s presence.

His devotion to the Holy Spirit was also central to his life. In fact, he experienced a powerful outpouring of the Spirit that deepened his love for God and strengthened his mission to guide souls toward holiness. Through prayer, confession, and spiritual direction, he became a source of renewal for many people in Rome.

On this memorial, we are invited to reflect on the joy that comes from a life lived with God. Not a fleeting happiness based on circumstances, but a lasting joy that remains even in trials. St. Philip Neri reminds us that holiness does not take away joy โ€” it perfects it.

May we learn from his example to live with lighter hearts, deeper faith, and greater love for God and others. And in moments of heaviness or discouragement, may we remember that true joy is found in Christ alone.

St. Philip Neri, pray for us. ๐Ÿค

Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church.
(Paggunita kay Birheng Maria, Ina ng Sambahayanan)

Mary, Mother of the Church
St. Paul VI, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council in 1964, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as โ€œMother of the Church," that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother and established that โ€œthe Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles." But it was not until February 11, 2018, that the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed a new obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church, into the General Roman Calendar. This memorial is celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost, which is appropriate as Mary was also present in that room for the birthday of the Church.
By issuing the Decree on the celebration of the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, Pope Francis wishes to promote this devotion in order to โ€œencourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety."
The decree reflects on the history of Marian theology in the Churchโ€™s liturgical tradition and the writings of the Church Fathers. It says Saint Augustine and Pope Saint Leo the Great both reflected on the Virgin Maryโ€™s importance in the mystery of Christ.
โ€œIn fact the former [St. Augustine] says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the latter [St. Leo the Great] says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church.โ€
The decree says these reflections are a result of the โ€œdivine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer."
Scripture, the decree says, depicts Mary at the foot of the Cross (cf. Jn 19:25). There she became the Mother of the Church when she โ€œaccepted her Sonโ€™s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life eternal.โ€
In 1964, the decree says, Pope Paul VI โ€œdeclared the Blessed Virgin Mary as โ€˜Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Motherโ€™ and established that 'the Mother of God should be further honoured and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles.โ€™โ€

Four things Iโ€™ve learned to always remember:

Prayer always works.

Things can still change.

God is always good.

And God will always provide for you.
