𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐖

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ.

Bartholomew is traditionally identified with Nathanael, whom Philip brought to Jesus. At first, Nathanael asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Yet when he encountered Christ, he professed his faith: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” (John 1:49)

After the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ, Saint Bartholomew is traditionally believed to have preached the Gospel in various regions of the East, including Armenia and India. Ancient tradition holds that he suffered martyrdom for faithfully proclaiming Christ and is often depicted carrying a knife, recalling the tradition of his martyrdom.

His life reminds us that an encounter with Christ can transform doubt into faith and curiosity into courageous discipleship. Like Bartholomew, we are called to recognize Jesus, follow Him without reservation, and proclaim the Gospel wherever God sends us.

𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐓. 𝐄𝐙𝐄𝐊𝐈𝐄𝐋 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐎

Today, August 19, the Order of Augustinian Recollects celebrates the Solemnity of St. Ezekiel Moreno, Bishop and Missionary, Patron of those afflicted with cancer, and the Titular Patron of the Philippine Augustinian Recollect Province.

Born on April 9, 1848 in Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain, St. Ezekiel entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and was sent as a missionary to the Philippines in 1870. For more than 15 years, he dedicated his life to serving the Filipino people with zeal and compassion, often enduring difficult conditions for the sake of the Gospel.

He was one of the most fervent devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Nuestra Señora de la Salud. During his years in the Philippines, particularly during his ministry in Manila and Intramuros, he fostered and promoted devotion to the Blessed Virgin under the title of Our Lady of Health.

St. Ezekiel invoked her as “Nuestra Señora, Salud de los Enfermos” and confidently sought her maternal patronage and intercession, especially for those who were sick and suffering. His devotion was not merely a personal piety, but a reflection of his trust in Mary’s maternal care and her role in bringing the afflicted closer to Christ, the Divine Physician.

He ministered as parish priest in several communities, notably at Our Lady of the Pillar Parish (now Imus Cathedral) in Cavite, St. Joseph Parish (now a Diocesan Shrine) in Las Piñas City, and Santa Cruz Church (now the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament) in Sta. Cruz, Manila, as well as in Talisay, Negros Occidental and other mission areas. His pastoral work was marked by great love for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.

He also played a role in founding Puerto Princesa, Palawan, bringing both the faith and social development to the area. There, he constructed a well that in time became known for its miraculous cures and as a vital source of water for the community—an enduring symbol of his care for both the spiritual and temporal needs of his flock.

In 1888, he was recalled to Spain and later sent to Colombia, where he was first appointed Apostolic Vicar of Casanare and eventually the Bishop of Pasto. His spirituality was likewise deeply rooted in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This profound love for Christ was expressed in his episcopal coat of arms, bearing the words: “My refuge and my strength.” These words express the heart of St. Ezekiel’s spirituality: in every trial, labor, and suffering, he placed his complete trust in Christ. The Sacred Heart was for him the source of strength in his missionary work, the consolation of his pastoral ministry, and the refuge to which he turned amid suffering.

His episcopal ministry was characterized by tireless evangelization, fervent defense of the faith, and tender care for his people. In his final years, St. Ezekiel suffered greatly from cancer, which he bore with patience, resignation, and deep faith, uniting his sufferings to Christ.

He died on August 19, 1906, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1992. Today, he is invoked as a patron of cancer patients, a missionary bishop who embodied courage, humility, and unwavering trust in God’s providence.

May St. Ezekiel Moreno’s profound devotion to Nuestra Señora de la Salud, "Salud de los Enfermos", inspire us to entrust our own sufferings and the sick of our communities to the loving intercession of the Mother of Health, always leading us to her Son, Jesus Christ.

As the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) continues to affect our country, we seek the protection and safety of Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother, Nuestra Señora de la Salud. Let us come together in prayer, asking for God’s mercy, grace, and protection during this challenging time.

May the Lord keep our families and communities safe from the dangers brought by the storms, and may Our Blessed Mother intercede for us and bring comfort to all those affected.

Clare was born in Montefalco, Italy, in 1268, the second daughter of Damiano and Iacopo Vengente. From a very early age she lived an eremitical life with her older sister Giovanna and another young woman in a small dwelling which Damiano had built for them. Clare was a lively and intelligent young girl, but equally prayerful and penitential. The small community of hermits grew, and in 1290 was established as a formal convent of nuns under the Rule of Saint Augustine.

Upon the death of Giovanna, Clare at 23 years of age was elected abbess, and became mother, teacher and spiritual director of the convent. A young woman of deep spiritual perception, though with almost no formal education, she was much sought after for advice and counsel from people of all walks of life, and from within the walls of the cloister became a director of many souls.

She was deeply devoted to the Passion of Christ and was known to experience periods of ecstasy as she contemplated the mystery of the Cross. For many years she received no consolation in her interior life except that of her own fidelity to prayer and acts of penance. During her final illness she repeated to her sisters that she bore the cross of Christ in her heart. After her death, this was verified when the nuns examined her heart and found in it symbols of the passion of the Lord, formed from cardial muscle. Clare died on August 17, 1308 at the age of 40 and was canonized by Leo XIII in 1881.

St. Roch (c. 1295–1327) was born with a cross-shaped red mark on his chest, seen as a sign that the Virgin Mary had answered his mother’s prayer for a child. Deeply religious from childhood, he fasted twice weekly, and at twenty gave his inheritance to the poor, entrusted his city to his uncle, and began life as a pilgrim.

Joining the Third Order Franciscans, he journeyed to Rome. On the way, he found plague-stricken towns, where he healed many simply by making the Sign of the Cross. In each afflicted place, including Rome, the spread of disease ceased through his care.

In Piacenza, however, Roch contracted the plague. Retreating to a forest hut, he was miraculously sustained by a nobleman’s dog that brought him food and licked his wounds, while a spring provided water. The nobleman later found him, and Roch recovered enough to return to Montpellier.

There, amid war, he concealed his noble identity but was accused of being a spy. Imprisoned by his uncle who did not recognize him, Roch accepted his fate and died five years later, attended by angels.

At the Council of Constance (1414), prayers to St. Roch ended another plague, and devotion to him spread widely. He became a patron against infectious diseases and is often depicted as a pilgrim with staff, seashell, a sore on his leg, an angel, and a dog. He is patron of dogs, dog owners, the sick, surgeons, bachelors, and against epidemics, plague, cholera, and other diseases. His feast is August 16.

Today, 15 August, Holy Mother Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring the mystery of Mary being taken up, body and soul, into Heaven.

For the Cofradía del Tránsito de Nuestra Señora, this celebration carries a particular historical and spiritual significance. The name of the Cofradía of Inay Salud comes from the ancient Christian devotion to the Transitus of the Blessed Virgin Mary — the passing of Mary from her earthly life into the fullness of life with God.

The word Transitus comes from the Latin transire, meaning “to pass over” or “to cross from one state to another.” In Christian tradition, the Transitus of Mary refers to her passage from this earthly life and her glorious entrance into Heaven.

Thus, the name 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢́𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚́𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐍𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐧̃𝐨𝐫𝐚 is not merely a title. It expresses a deep belief: that Mary, who faithfully journeyed with Christ in this life, now shares fully in His glory.

Our devotion to Nuestra Señora de la Salud is therefore deeply connected to this mystery. As Our Lady of Health, she accompanies her children through suffering, illness, and the wounds of earthly life. As the woman who has passed into glory, she reminds us that our earthly journey does not end in suffering, but ultimately leads toward complete healing and eternal life with God.

The Transitus of Mary invites every Cofrade and devotee to see life as a pilgrimage: from earth toward Heaven, from suffering toward healing, and from our temporary home toward our eternal home with God.

On this day, we remember the sacred moment when this house of prayer was consecrated to God: its altar anointed, its walls blessed, and its sanctuary set apart as a dwelling place for the Most High. The Cubao Cathedral – Roman Catholic Diocese of Cubao has stood as a sign of God’s abiding presence, where His Word resounds, His Sacraments give life, and His people gather as one Body in Christ.

Under the loving protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Immaculate Mother, may our Cathedral continue to be a beacon of faith, a refuge for the weary, and a wellspring of grace for generations to come.

As devotees of Nuestra Señora de la Salud, we are reminded that Mary always leads us closer to her Son, Jesus. May her loving intercession continue to guide the faithful who seek healing, comfort, and hope, and may our devotion to Inay Salud inspire us to cherish our churches as sacred spaces where we encounter God’s mercy and healing.

The Cathedral will celebrate this occasion as a Solemnity, while parishes within the Diocese of Cubao will observe it as a Feast.

“O God, who year by year renew for us the day when this your holy temple was consecrated, hear the prayers of your people and grant that in this place for you there may always be pure worship and for us, fullness of redemption.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
