The history of this venerated image traces back to 1894, when master Filipino sculptor Manuel Flores carved the second, larger altar image of Our Lady of Lourdes to accommodate the rapidly growing devotion in Manila. This very image survived the heavy bombardment of World War II inside the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, was later transferred to the University of Santo Tomas, then moved to Sta. Teresita del Niño Jesus in Mayon, and was finally solemnly transferred to her new Shrine in Retiro—remaining completely undamaged throughout as a testament to her miraculous protection. This image is the same beloved icon honored and venerated by generations of devotees during the traditional Ceremonía de Besapíes.
Recognizing centuries of documented intercessions and the deep, unwavering devotion of the Filipino people toward this venerable image, Pope Francis issued a papal decree granting her sacred image the honor of a Pontifical Coronation.
Though the solemn crowning was originally set for May 2, 2020, national lockdown restrictions forced its postponement. The long-awaited, historic rites were triumphantly celebrated on August 22, 2020—the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary—symbolizing a profound victory of hope and spiritual refuge in a time of global trial.
Six years later, we look back on her coronation with immense gratitude, asking Our Lady of Lourdes to continue pouring out her healing grace, motherly protection, and divine comfort over our lives and families.
