Saints of the Day – November 4
St. Nicander and St. Hermas: Witnesses of Unshakable Faith
Today, the Church honors two courageous martyrs of the early Christian era—St. Nicander and St. Hermas, steadfast witnesses to the Gospel in the face of persecution. Hailing from Myra in Lycia (modern-day Turkey), these holy men lived during the 3rd century, a time when professing faith in Christ often meant facing torture and death.
Nicander, believed to be a bishop or priest, and Hermas, his faithful companion—possibly a deacon or lay brother—stood firm when commanded to renounce their faith and worship Roman gods. With unwavering conviction, they chose Christ over compromise, enduring imprisonment and suffering for the sake of the Gospel. Their martyrdom became a beacon of hope for the persecuted Church and a lasting testimony of fidelity.
As we commemorate their feast today, may their example stir in us a deeper courage to live our faith boldly, and a renewed trust in the grace of Christ who strengthens us in every trial.
